I notice that when the live viewer is running, and I'm editing materials or objects, or switching on and off render visibility for objects, the octane status bar at the bottom left of the c4d interface says "check other time 2.116" or "check other time 2.093".

Does that mean Octane is stopping me doing things for 2 seconds every time I make a change? It feels like it. What are the 'others' it's checking anyway?
Mitchino, I'll just share my experience for comparison. I find I can use Octane LV w/no delay, even with heavy scenes. I'm PC/Windows 10/ Octane 2018.3. And I often have other 2,3 other programs up. Sometimes I pause LV but that's usually just to save electricity.

i Imagine you have several top end GPUs?

Well I'm running 2x 2080tis and I gotta be honest, sometimes the UI (for example the mat editor) and the viewport performance really is super jaggedy - Like its running on really low FPS. I reckon thats "normal" though and different from the problem you are having as my LV still updates quickly once I make the changes. Still, I wanted to point it out if its of any help.

The FPS drop kind of looks like if you are running a fairly heavy scene and you make the LV work at something crazy like 8000x4000 - That will make the entire UI quite slow. :) And yeah, I tried running it on a single GPU too, doesn't help.

That's really interesting. Your problems are exactly the same as mine. The LV updates are ok, it's the interactivity in the c4d interface while the LV is running that's unbelievably slow, like click a visibility button or connect one node to another takes 2 seconds. My scene isn't that heavy, around 1GB, but has glass and liquid in it. I am rendering at 2400 x 2400 pixels, but I need to do that to see the details in my materials.

I spoke to a 3d artist last year and he told me he had experimented with Octane and found that adding more cards added rendering speed to the live viewer and the final render, but made no difference to basic interactivity. I'd like to know what would make the biggest difference to interactivity. I don't really care how long my final renders take, I just want the fastest look dev response possible.

Hi mitchino.
please post a screenshoot from c4doctane settings Devices and Others panels, thanks.
The best is always to have a dedicated GPU for system/monitors/OpenGL, and one or more GPUs for CUDA rendering only.

more important that what happens if you have a smaller resolution in Live Viewer?

Please, post also a screenshot from the Others panel.
Assuming that 1080ti has also the monitor connected, if you set the Priority to High, it is like having the Priority disabled.
Please set it to Low.

Here's the others panel.

The monitor is plugged in to the 980ti, not the 1080ti.

It's like the LV is taking the main c4d hostage, while it's running, the main c4d interface is sluggish. I thought the CPU would take care of that while the GPU runs the LV?

I'll try lower render resolution, but I need to be able to see fine detail in bump maps etc.

Priority should be enabled and set to LOW, only for the GPU connected to monitor.
Please, connect the monitor 1080ti instead, in this way you should have more available VRAM.
Also, always make sure to have disabled the Synchronize on geo update option, in Octane Settings / Others,. If enabled can cause instability issues under OsX.
