Maybe you could try to install win 7 on a second hd and test the stability, at least you will gain back more than 1GB of VRAM stolen by win 10:

But this doesn't explain why in my case octane was working and now even a cube causes this error. Still trying to suss out if it's the card, driver or octane issue.

I ran a GPU-Z tool. It shows that the VRAM usage is pretty similar in WIN10 and WIN7. So I don't think it's about the memory. Also it can show an error even on simple scenes :(
