*** SOLVED *** (Perhaps)

I started messing with some of the render settings and when I upped Ray epsilon, Eureka! The shadow problem was no more.

I found this post that explains what Ray epsilon does.
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=48425

For my example scene, upping the setting from the default of 0.0001 to 0.03 did the trick. I did notice, however, that increasing Ray epsilon does reduce the shadow density compared to the shadows when 'Cast illumination' is turned off.

I would appreciate any community or Otoy comments on the subject.

Thanks aoktar. How does this relate to the problem with the shadow pass and emissive materials?

I reviewed the link you sent, but it refers to Direct Lighting. I am actually using Path Tracing when the error occurs. The section , in the link you sent, re: Path Tracing is unclear about Ray epsilon and simply states: "Ray Epsilon: See this topic." with no link to what "this topic" is.

Again, I just stubbled into the Ray epsilon setting that seemed to have an effect on the shadow pass problem. I would really like to understand how to fix the shadow pass problem when using emissive materials or have confirmation that this is a bug that will be addressed in a future update.

Thanks again.

FYI, this problem still exists. Any feedback on what is going on here and how to fix it?

POSTED TO SOON!

It looks like there are different options now in Emission settings. Turning OFF "Cast shadows" fixes the problem with no changes to Ray Epsilon required.
