Octane render should simply read the geometries as such and not for materials.
In the standalone export several times a complicated scene, you must assign each a different material geometry.
This is because octane import for materials, but mostly because you can not select a single geometry if belonging to the same material.

But not the best option for the user.

User doesn't like to think on workarounds and like smooth workflows. Cleaning a complex scene isn't nothing for users, it's something for an automatic running code.
As I posted in the McNeel forums - I cannot see how a plugin can determine if a material is a duplicate - since in some situations it is OK to have duplicate material names. This looks like a bug in Rhino - so it is something McNeel need to address. It is not in the scope of functionality of the OctaneRender for Rhino plugin.

If you do not want to have this problem. You must organize layers of materials. Example: Layer ... Steel, Rocks, Oak ..etc
1 selections geometries within level (oak)
2 go to Properties> Materials> assigns material layer.
Do you want to make sure, you do not mesh with the same material (name). click on duplicate and rename, if you want.
It is fast enough as workflow.

Often I need the layers to turn on/of different states and variations of a scene. Using layers for materials cause a much more complex layer structure some times.
