Would be great to have a neutral linear response but with a little more contrast like some other responses have.
Or maybe a curve control where you can adjust levels...

Yes, a way of adjusting level realtime would be awesome! I find myself sometimes with multiple copies and switching to viewport to check the balance
Though the PS-plugin comes in here

If you want more contrast, just decrease the gamma (you may have to up the exposure to compensate, but this is essentially what the gamma control is for). In a good workflow, your render should not be already color corrected, as it should be like you took a photograph with a camera. Then later in the project flow you adjust it with a color correction.

Linear all the way.
Gamma 2.0 - 2.2 is the best place to start. White balance to pure white for neutral; unless colour balancing to an HDR.
The colour of your textures will appear (almost) exactly like your source textures. You can desaturate in camera if you need to.
Render all your frames out as open EXR so you can fine tune curves/saturation/gamma in post.
It's just a suggestion, but we've had a lot of luck using this method.

O

Hey Oli!
I've tried a number of different methods. What I've settled on sounds about the same as what we do. Just to expand a bit...
MAX
...Gamma/LUT enabled, at 2.2
...Affect color selectors
...Don't affect material editor
Octane Camera
...Exposure as desired (plus use EXR as suggested)
...Gamma 2.2
...Linear response
...White balance as needed to correct unwanted sun or HDRI coloring (usually this is for picky clients)
Does this sound right?

Hey Scott,
Sounds about right!
Just to reiterate, we use this when we want the colouring as neutral as possible when we need to do a lot of post.
Only small difference is under the Max setting...we let it 'affect' the mat editor. But that's really just user preference.

O

Do you ever use camera/film profiles? If so, got any faves?

We did in the beginning, but I can't say we use them too much these days.
I'm definitely going to re-explore them.

So what was the "this"? Film profile? Linear? White bal? .....
And what is your norm when not trying to keep colors neutral?
