I think "what the hell is wrong with these people" is that your textures are repeating. If you look at the real piece, each repeated element (staggered or not) is actually different, as its a different 'slice' from an actual chunk of wood. If you then look at yours, each element is exactly the same image, repeated 3-4 times across the way.
