An update to this.....I am using Nvidia drivers 3.40, which seem very buggy - and there is lots of screen flickering. There are many posts on this same issue, so it looks like a known bug, waiting a fix. Unfortunately there does not appear to be an Nvidia driver available which works with Octane 2 which does not have this issue.

I'm running the 331 drivers on Linux Mint and have no problems with either Octane 2.04 or Blender 2.71 (except the install issues I posted above). I did run the Octane demo 2.03 on my work computer (Ubuntu 14.04 also running the 331 drivers) and the fonts were all messed up but it still detected cuda. You might be having some other install issues than just the video drivers?

Thanks. I thought the minimum driver requirement for Octane 2.0 was 335.23. I will revert back to 331 and see if that fixes the issue.
EDIT: 311 resolves the problems.

I've tried all the way, with all the recent drivers available and just a lot of frustration
Any way I'll try with the 311 version as it seems to work for Face_off, didn't even expect it to work with older versions. I used the standalone version with Ubuntu 10 about 3 years ago and didn't had such problems with then Nvidia drivers, I'm afraid that the version 14 of Ubuntu is less reliable. Will check that this evening ...

I have Ubuntu 14.04 and Nvidia driver 331.89 (according to Software and Updates), and whilst Octane Standalone runs, if I try to render something, I get:
Code: Select all
Started logging on 31.07.14 21:24:24
OctaneRender version 2.04 (2040000)
CUDA error 999 on device 4294967295: An unknown internal error occurred.

I purged 340, then reinstalled 331, selected 331 from the Software and Updates screen, rebooted, Software and Updates shows 331 in use, but when I type "lspci -vnn | grep -i VGA -A 12" it shows "Kernel driver in use: nouveau".
$110 of a Windows 8 license is looking pretty good right now.

It seams with latest distribution the repository driver are crippled.
I had the same problem with Opensuse.
After manual installation with the driver from Nvidia all work well.
Cheers, mib

Hi Paul, first page, post 7+9.
I use 340.27.
Cheers, mib
EDIT: I have information many people have problems with 14.04 and Cuda with Blender Cycles too.
One reported Cuda does not work with 340.27 but 331.67 work so all a bit confusing.
May Octane team can clarify.
