It's the way GPU programming is atm. Vray builds it's GPU "code" dynamically according to what features are used. This makes the speed more adaptive.

Déjà vu by the way at RandomControl. Arion 1.6 was way faster than the 2.x versions. Same explanations over there.
I don't like it.

nice idea even if i have to uncheck what i dont need and restart octane. then if for instance i need hair enable it and restart octane and it will be a bit slower

Just a wild suggestion
keep 1.5 as well as 2.xx and 3.xx (when it comes out) on your computer and default back to earlier versions when you don't need some of the features of the latest version on a particular render!
Now if Otoy could bring out a regressed V 0.5 version with just the very basics that could render a large scene in 50 milliseconds , that would be good

to be clear. arion 1.6 was faster than the ARION 2.x versions..
that and other reasons lead us to switch (or better: concentrate more on) to octane back then.
cross software comparison is a difficult task. so you won't hear a vote from me here which software actually is faster.
basically I am totally happy with octane. of course the impact on rendering speed hurts.
I just don't want to accept votes like "buy a better gpu", since rendering was and has always to be about efficiency/speed.
cheers

that may be, i just can't "feel" it. the speed loss on standalone 2.0 was massive in both ui performance and rendering speed.
maybe it's also about my 7gpu setup, but also on my partners 3gpu workstation it felt the same way.
no offense. arion is also a great product. that speed loss just hurt the same as the one of octane 2.

If your UI is getting sluggish, double check the priority settings. It could be that they have been reset and the GPU you use for display is not using the priority anymore (and therefore there is no 'power' free for doing the UI)

tnx for the input. that's not the problem in my case.
I never use the display GPU for rendering. and I use GPU shark for confirmation..
anyway, do you think it will be possible to REALLY disable features like suggested in some posts above, like launching different kernels?
for most projects the 1.55 features are sufficient for us, so having the option to degrade and getting the speed would really be great.
cheers and again: octane is a great product so far
cheers
