with 2.0 you will need to double the performance of your hw because the core now is 2x slower
Yesterday I was observing that Embree is the answer.
Octane 2.0 is slow because Cuda is not ok and programmers has to invent complex tricks to add new features.

That's not correct. Octane is not 2x slower. We received only one scene so far that showed a big speed drop of 45% and we are currently trying to fix this problem. In all other scenes we have seen "only" a speed drop of 10-20%, which is not great either, but not as bad as 50%. And we are working on it. There is probably still room for improvement, but I can't say if and when things will be improving.

So if you have got scenes that show a massive speed drop, please send us one or two example scenes (see http://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=40446). Just complaining on the forum doesn't help at all.

Ya, I am seeing sometimes 10-20 percent decrease, but nothing like 50%. To me, the new features are well worth the decrease in speed.

^ True dat... And if adding volumetrics and paticles etc slows core another 20%, so be it. I want features. I can always add GPUs. :ugeek:

Not everyone can add GPUs. Not everyone has great financial opportunities. It's good to have a fast rendering thanks to good software. Octane render is characterized mainly by high speed rendering. It is the best way to go. ;)

Let's not just allow an assumption that Octane 2 is slower (regardless of how much). It isn't! There are some scenes that are, but there are some scenes that are faster - considerably.

There were some scenes that I thought definitely rendered faster. Then I realized it was because 2.0 defaults to a diffuse depth of 8 instead of 12 like in 1.5. However, I've only seen relatively small speed loss so far, but it's still early days for my testing.
