The specular mtl delivers a good SSS, i agree, but, as far as i know, there is no possibility to put a diffuse texture, so the result is too dark.
Your mtl looks interesting, can you put a screenshot of your settings please?
I don't see why a glossy mtl can't have a scattering node, it make sens. In any other engines, doing sss is easy, i don't understand why it is so complicated in octane, i just need an explanation.
By example, in arnold, the standart mtl have 3 parameters for the sss : weight, color and radius. Simple but make sens.
In RenderMan, much more settings, really efficient.
