Don't forget to play with camera presets (real film reference), you may find the right ambiance in few clicks to match the HDRi colors.

WTF? mbetke, if you are not making at least $50 (36 euros) an hour, you are doing something woefully wrong. And in Germany of all places!.. I could see if you were from Bangalore or something. And no way did that pool image only take a couple hours.. Yes, volume discounts when multiple images from same assets.... But you are not charging nearly enough bro. Right guys?

Here in France, CG work official value is from 300 Euros up to 550 Eupros per day, according to the complexity and required technics of the work. Gross hourly cost doesn't mean anything as nothing can be done in one hour, but average hourly cost is rarely Under 50 Euros.

Usually there is a basis cost for building the scene (1 day, two days...), and an extra cost per additionnal render of the scene.

This beeing said, around here there are very few clients for at least two reasons : The first one is that nowadays most architect do their 3D work internally and do not require any more freelance CG artists, and the other one is because too many people not paying taxes and social contribution kill the market with prices totally off scale, at 1/2 or even 1/4 of the official work cost ! In such conditions, any realistic quotation, even at the lower price of the official scale is refused most of the time !

Frank, I see your point but it is a bit different. First of all I do not only low-cost projects and are far over your 36€ a hour. My "break even" is around 40€ a hour. I work alone, have a professional equipped home-office, mount my workstations by myself. And I even license my software and pay a lot of taxes.

I can offer this kind of prices because I stick to strictly to 3D collections which I have prepared for Octane, and reuse them in many projects like every artist. Also I try to automate as much as I can with scripts and plugins. I agreed with this client once to use the 5-7 prepared scenes and modify them. He also gives me the construction files in 3d format already. This turns down my costs down with every new render I do for him since nearly two years now plus other projects like this stuff terraces now.

The problem is if a client once is used to such prices it is hard to communicate higher ounces for more individual work. But overall here in Germany clients are very aware of work and are willing to pay money. Especially construction industry. Maybe not much arch-viz where I don't have lots projects anymore.

Roubal, I worked a regular for French clients in 2011-2012 with Lumion3D animations. But more and more French companies are really using the easy soft their self and don't need professional services. Too bad for us individuals. I think in ten years there will be only larger 3D companies doing most of the larger viz work like animations with greenscreen works and all the small stuff will be done in-house.

.. I'm just gonna say that for someone in order to determine if your work is good, that person needs to be as proficient as you in order to properly criticize

- in other words, what your client is saying, that the works are not "real enough" is his own interpretation, or comparison to something else he thinks is btter - what you need is for him to show you what he means by more realistic - you could be surprised at what exactly he means

Sorry to break the conversation flow here, but earlier in this thread:
we on the other hand will need to add Chromatic aberration so our images can become less clear and more believable.
Where in Octane do you adjust that? Is that in Post Processing?

Treddie, I've seen someone hereusing CA with the stand-alone but I think you have to add it in post (photoshop) if you use one of the plugins.

Can you use the HDR background just as background (not as light emitter) and then usa enother picture with less blue as the lights? I remember, that the guys at sIBL pack several file sinto their packages: The background and a very blurry version oif the background, just the highlights. If the highlight blur version has no big blue parts and is better matching the sunlight, maybe that helps?
