Here is a quick test with one of the CGskies HDRI:s. this one has a very high dynamic range. With normal gamma the shadows are not very visible and everything is a bit too blue. I used a 1.8 gamma in Octane. The gamma is reversed in Octane so in photoshop this should be 0,55. a bit lower gamma might have been better maybe.
I let it render for 5 minutes with pathtracing and 5 bounces. about 8Ms/sec with a slightly overclocked GTX 780. I think this technique is very nice for exterior renders. Not sure if you can pull of an interior render with this method in octane.
Edit: another example with a sunset HDRI. This one cleaned up in like a minute. I think I used PMC. AS you can see the shadows are very clear.
