I lack some feedback from the material settings. - I converted some materials to octane. Now changing the diffuse color of the material is not showing the result in the material preview at all. it is used on the model / viewport nethertheless. Also I see no specular / reflection / roughness ... change reflected in the material preview at all.
sometimes when opening and closing the material setting the default color is adapted to the last setting but not always. specularity, roughness.... is not shown at all or I do something wrong.

The biggest minus at the moment - it is not intuitive at all.

I have no clue why there is no light in my scene when I use a cinema light / sky object / phys. sky object and give it an octane tag but when I have no light set at all then rendering with pathtracing and direct lighting is showing light - yet I cannot influence the direction of light. (and there is no sun)

something curious: I have a floor object with a dark grey (35/35/35) material on it - that is showing up in dark green.

for the moment it is nice to play around, but it needs to get more intuitive to set up stuff faster without knowing a LOT of variables. Even though it is hardly that fast - Maxwell and Cinema are both doing a really nice job in that case... - Is there any hope that the plugin will change in usability?

I'm not sure about texture paths, actually plugin only send names to Octane for rendering. May be octane sdk problem.
I can load a texture with a special character in the Octane Standalone.
Maybe if you try to decode the path in Unicode ?

It's very pleasant to see you as motivated, keep up the great work !
can you show your path?

I hope this is the right thread on which to list bugs etc and post observations on the plugin for you.

Octane Daylight / Sun Object

I have found a bug where the Sun object if created by the Octane Live Viewer is not responding/updating changes but it's fine if created in C4D and an Octane tag added:

1. New basic scene with Cube and Plane
2. From The Octane Plugin Live Viewer click 'Create Objects' then 'Daylight' to produce an OctaneDaylight object with tag and a Sun tag.
3. In Live viewer click send to render
4. In C4D sun expression tag, change month, year, day, time etc. and nothing updates the position of the sun at all (in C4D or Octane Live Viewer).
n.b. the Octane Tag (Turbidity, Power, NorthOffset etc) all work fine

*Delete the Octane Daylight object*

1. Create a C4D Sun object
2. Add an Octane Daylight Tag

Now all changes to C4D Sun time, year, Long. Lat. etc works as intended :)

Materials

I've realised I now have to re-create all my materials as I can't import the .ocm macros I'd saved when working with the standalone. Not sure if this will change once you link to the LiveDB as I think they are all .ocm format? In the meantime I am using the materials in the example scenes to take some inspiration from.. :)

Really enjoying the plugin so far, thatnks for the hard work. Looking forward to seeing this develop over time.
Thanks firstly, it's glad to hear

Object preset on Live Viewer has some problems. That's not tested so much. I'm working on. If you try manually same setup will work. is it right?

this is first release with some missing features. we have released because of impatient of folk. I'll spend effort to complete these features.
Soon will be published fixes, so i need to hear problems.

import/export material, livedb features will come next releases

i'll open a thread bug/todo list/wishes thread soon

Hi Aoktar,

Yes, the daylight object works fine if first created in C4D (as normal) and then an Octane tag is added. The sun object is then able to move with the Time/Day/Year etc as normal.

i missed that sun expression is disabled for freely to rotate light.

Is just when there is a special character on it.

I tried with the more simple example :

C:\é.jpg Don't work

C:\e.jpg Work.

Material Previews

Hi Aoktar,

One more for your list :)

Material previews are not working in the Content Browser which is making life difficult when I am trying to save materials into some sort of order to build my library inside C4D.

Screenshot below shows that the Octane material preview shows in the Attributes tab but disappears when dragged (or Saved as a Material Preset) into the Content Browser.

Image

I think it would be nice to have the Octane Material Preview from the Standalone (the model and it's background) as the Octane-C4D material preview if this is possible?

I tried to create a preview material scene for Octane in the C4D/library folder on my HDD but it is not working. This is probably my fault, it looks like it should be a simple scene!

hmm, this is important feature which is missing. Thanks you for pointing this.
previews is limited with lonely ball rightnow. we want to be improved this. But need time, but you can think so. this is realtime renderer you don't need to look to preview balls while doing adjusment
