I've only circled a few areas, but they're all over the place (all around the red pawn, all around the knight on the top right). It's as if every object had a black outline.

Hi Chirs. Those are smoothing artifacts caused by low poly geometry. When such things occur one must add more polygons to his/hers models and problem will be gone. Other solution would be to split the edges on problematic areas.

Cheers,

That is good news. I often render at 6-8K. It's not uncommon in print work at all, especially if integrating 3D elements into modern high-res digital captures. Current job I'm working on has 10X12K final renders. Punishing :)

Great that you managed to do this radiance.
I know there were a number of people asking after enough res. for A0/A1 output.
Most likely they are from a business that can well afford 2 or even 3,4,6gb cards so I dont think its an issue.
Better to have the capability than not.
Keep up the good work guys :)

Do note you can render 20k+ with octane already via host app nodal pans and post stitching. Be that on modest cards.

Requires some tools to be written, I thought about doing that for 3dsmax.

That would be interesting.

I dont know about what you are proposing but wouldnt there be issues with vignetting and such between tiles?
How can the camera pan in Octane without changing the perspective?
Do you mean to use some panorama stitching program like Hugin?

Please don't jump to such erroneous conclusions.
1. It's just as likely that an individual - whether freelancer or hobbyist - could need or desire to output at such a size.
2. The payment for such design related jobs varies EXTREMELY between different countries, while the cost of hardware remains practically the same regardless of country, or sometimes even costing more in countries with lower wage brackets.

So it's far from 'most likely'.

hehe ok I am told off.
ATM it is a fact of life that you are going to need to have a card with enough ram to handle very large scenes/renders with Octane - unless :) they could be stitched as described above.
I am not sure what people charge where you live but I had heard that some people get 300 euro each for archviz. Is that 600 euro for an A1?? dunno..
We dont get that money where I am.
If you are doing these renders all the time then you are probably going to invest in the equipment (and charge accordingly). That was my point really. I was thinking of an architectural firm as opposed to a hobbyist/freelancer...but ok now I know I made an assumption.
The gpu solution is still less expensive than the equivalent cpu one for an unbiased renderer. :)
I am not in a position to know if it is better for you to buy a gpu with more vram or spend 10-15x longer waiting on a cpu.

because those objects are quite low poly.

the new GTX260 with 2GB is cheap and can do a pretty neat render at large resolution.
i see that as a good solution for people wanting to render print size images who can't afford 4GB tesla boards.
