Proupin. I'm not against a lot of things You mentioned =)

Z-depth in post pro actually doesn't solve all the issues
(it doesn't get into acount all the reflactive/refractive information)

..in the end. It's just a forum where comunity members express their view.
maybe You (& others) are right, & maybe it is needed if this functionality will help
someOne to push their work a bit more =)

Guys, I'm not here for fighting, just expresing different point of view.

Cheers

P.S. Profbetis, to answer ''Why would you want less control and not more?''
- Sometimes simpler render engine may lead to better rendertimes,
pluss if You have less of options it's not a bad thing too..

OR is fast, simple tool & personally I would like to see it developing that way.
(Personally I preffere this tool to be Simple&Fast rather then Complex&Slow).

Hm, interesting.

I think it's going to be a challenge to keep it simple and fast because the users want to get cinema-standard visuals and need the power to do that. I love it being fast and simple too but if push comes to shove, I'd rather have more power and realism.

Some might see airplanes and hearts bokeh examples and think that this is to play around. No it is not a fancy toy.
But a custom bokeh could be very subtle, giving the render a much more realistic appeal.
If this is embeded as an input for the camera node (attached image or floatimage) then it is not messy. Just a solid, simple extention with a lot of benifits. Expanding the foundation for realism.
Here are some simple bokeh examples from a blog at http://alieneye.ru .
No airplanes and hearts but still custom bokehs:
I think they come with optical flares from Videocopilot, but I am not sure...

perhaps it would slow down rendertimes, specially if we were allowed to use bitmaps for it... still, if it was an option to turn off bokeh shapes, it would mean no slowdown if you chose not to use it. I would really like to know Otoy's opinion on this... this was first requested on January 2010, and back then Radiance made it look like something easy to do, although with preset shapes: http://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2624#p2624 ... but he never did as we know.

glimpse, keep opinions coming they're all appreciated, and debatable. This forum has always been great for that, great people, merry christmas

Also if you've seen the film Scott Pilgrim vs The World, there is some excellent usage of custom bokeh's, when Scott is talking to Ramona on the bus the shapes change depending on the subject - beautifully done and this is from a very experienced director of photography http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0691084/ - certainly not a toy !

so, +1 !

Hi,
I think i'll give my +1 on this subject. From my experience in other render engines and with postpro plugins, I always find that the bokeh results are much better when calculated straight in rendering if compared to lense effects based on z-depth pass.
On the other hand, you have more flexibility if you use the "z-depth pass" way.
So in my opinion I'd vote for a realtime solution within Octane, similar to glare and bloom in the current version.
Thanks for your effort.

Greetings and merry christmas from Spain,

+10 We really need it for pro vfx work that needs to match CG bokeh to live action Bokeh .
