I continue my tests between Maya and Octane
This time, I try to find translation from Maya materials and OC mats.
I started with MLT parameters.

Code: Select all

Kd is diffuse color in Maya
Ks is specular color
Ns is cosinus power for phong mat
Ni is IOR
1_ To create a diffuse OC mat simply use a lambert and edit diffuse color :D

2_ To create a glossy use a phong.
Edit diffuse color for diffuse in glossy
Edit Cosine Power phong for Roughness in glossy
Edit Specular Color in phong for Specular in glossy
exportMLT_mayaGlossy.jpg
exportMLT_ParamGlossy.jpg
A question : I tried to put 100 000 in Roughness but parameter window in Octane became Red. OC does not allow values up to 10 000?

3_ To create a Specular use a phong.
Edit diffuse color for transmission in OC specular
Edit Specular Color in phong for Reflection in OC specular
Edit Refractive Index for index in OC specular
Notice that I have to keep a value for Cosine Power otherwise material turns to Diffuse in OC
Notice that there's a difference between minimum in Ns and Cosine power. Minimum in Cos Power is 2; Minimum in Ns is 0. So Cos Pow 100 = Ns 98

exportMLT_paramSpecular.jpg
to be continue...

Very nice tests
That will be usefull to a lot of users around

This should be added in some way in the documentation
If anyone got 3DS Max also to test ?

Thanks for the material settings for Maya to octane! It is really useful to have this information.

I've just received my GTX260
I can now play with the beast
And I bought my license yesterday; so waiting for beta as everybody ;)

Some tests with old mod to push glossy and specular materials (impossible with my previous card!)

Nice models! A little DOF will really sell these small items.

Yes you're right for DOF; but forgot it during rendering.
And with demo version scenes have gone

To repair that, a speed comparison test
On top, a scene rendered last year with a unbiased cpu based renderer "named by a color" :)
2h with a bixeon

Second image, same scene cooked today with Octane; 7 mn with GTX 260.
With bump it would be perfect

Bonus, more with the same scene for fun

hi ageless1003,
Octane can open octane scenes (created with octane) and import OBJ files.
To render your maya scenes in octane, first export your geometries in OBJ using export parameters on page 01 of this thread.
Next, open Octane, right click on grapheditor and chose objects>mesh.
Then click on the node and rendering should start.
Ask if you need more help...

Hi there, I too am trying to get this to work, and while I had no trouble getting materials and textures to come over per the instructions (thank you!), My UV's are completely screwed up. How do you set up the UV's on your geometry to properly transfer over?

Thanks again
