I don't agree.
SSS, panoramic cameras, matte shader and a lot of good stuff didn't seem in reach some time ago, so it is exactly the right thing to pull out an old but important topic because technology has advanced.
And there is always a work around.
I remember staff saying day light with specular shadows is (almost) not possible. And what do we have now with 1.11? Shadows with specular material and daylight system. It is a fake solution but it works. The same thing was said about the direct lighting system and transparent shadows 2 years ago - Marcus put his hands on and a few weeks later we had transparent shadows with daylight in DL.
So that shows that the demand of the users will create solutions and break technological boarders not vice versa.
Just my 2 cents.

I am sure there is a possibility to achive this. Marcus and the team are brilliant ;)

"The problem is that you can only bake diffuse as its non-directional.
Since unbiased engines have glossy, specular, transmission, SSS, etc, which are all directional reflections.
They cannot be baked, and the use of an unbiased engine for this purpose is not worth it."

why do You still lift up this topic? Doesn't get the answer? read again =p 'cos now it sounds like this:

Q: CAN WE USE LENS of 50MM F1.4 INSTEAD TO HIT NAILS? ..
A: maybe You can but it's expensive, maybe You would instead better to buy a real hamer?
Q: well, but I would like to use the lens instead, it would be nice..

/dead end.. =)))
Dude:
1. If you don`t see it, it doesn`t mean it`s not there.
2. If you don`t need it, it doesn`t mean I can`t use it.
3. If you really want to be polite, I know you can do it.

+1

So long as it comes after BG Image and Primary Visibility (unseen by camera), which supposedly
both are being worked on now.

In a perfect world, Otoy magically becomes like Pixologic - and starts blowing our f-ing minds with
shite that we never had any clue that we needed... and I mean needed.. which ZBrush has proven
over and over and over.

3. Pinochio, I'm not trying to be impolite by any means =) just exagerated the view with a bit of harsh comparison.
2. Yes, I don't need that at the moment, but it doesn't mean I couldn't use that in the future (though I believe Octane it's just not that tool..

last but not least (1) Yes i'm not a developer..and I might not see the possibilities..
but as there were things already expressed by Radiance about what would stop this from happening..

why not just to go look for other tools that would do the work instead of talking about the same thing over again? =)

Wich unbiased renderer can bake textures. I don`t know any. Do you?

as far as I know there's none /..but, I'm not on that topic too much & I might be wrong/

as already said, maybe there's quite a good technical reason why it's not yet done..
/or will not be done at all with all those Unbiased renders..

I dont know, someone want this to do quick animations moving just camera, maybe someone can call Radiance and ask again! Lol.

Even if only for WebGL and game development, I think this would be huge...
but if it is not possible, it is not possible.
