yeah that's nice :) perhaps the middle bit should be a cylindrical button of the same material as the ball rather than the inside (if that makes sense..)

it sorta reminds me of a nose sticking out of a red helmet and a short red cape atm
maybe it's an Octane mascot in the making...a small man living inside the render ball. SuperOctaneMan

..maybe its just the way my brain works.. :?

Ahahaha the idea of a small man living in the material sphere is freaking awesome, what did you smoked I want the same
Yes im gonna make the round thing the same external material like the blender one

Im not gonna have so much time today to work on the material sphere.
Keep coming with improvement ideas because im gonna make different ones for Radiance.

(edit: just seen your photoshop... I almost spit my coffee  its very good)

Followed pixelrush idea

Now I need to go see Avatar 3D
(no Octane for 2h40 how sad !)

Next step is subsurface bar (but where ?? I dont have a lot of space in the sphere, maybe I should try with the ring)
Octane render printed somewhere
Bubbles inside the thickness for glass / water materials
Floor texture / UV's (im gonna need someone who is very good at UV)
LIghting (most important point)

Radiance im thinking out loud but if you hard-code it in Octane, why not for lighting using a small HDR and no polygons/emmiters ?
Maybe someone should make the light rig in a regular 3D software and bake an HDR from it to use in Octane !

The perfect unbiased lighting would be to take HDR photography of real photo studio
like these http://www.hdrlighting.com/hdrimages.html (real studios)
Or these http://www.hdrlightstudio.com/hdrilightpacks.html (real softboxes and real spotlights)

I don't know what do you think Radiance but if we cant make those HDR ourself we gonna need to buy license for them and that's not the best solution.

SO If anyone know how to take proper HDR and has access to photo rig it would be perfect !

I just saw Avatar just 1h ago (run to the cinema if you have not already seen it)
Here's the material ball Pandora-night style

yeah not bad...almost there.
it maybe an optical illusion but it looks as though the middle tapers to the ball centre? it doesnt quite seem right to my eye.. ;)
I was wondering if it would look better with a flat face and parallel sides...or taper the other way..
how about 'Octane' being part of the ground texture instead of on the ball?

join in community! what say you? :)

apologies for bad MS paint skills.. :?

Its not an illusion the middle tapers the same ammount than the Octane logo but since its a smaller piece its more visible.
Ill give it a try with a regular middle like you show in your MS paint. Also taper the other way is an option ill try.

I had the same idea to put the Octane in the ground texture but also adding "render" since Radiance want me to use "Octane render"
Im at work currently so no updates now but later today.

I need advices for bubbles inside the material, does I do booleans ? Or small spheres with 100% reflective material ?

Thanks for the constructive criticism Pixelrush :)

Small update, no tapper of the inside circle.
The perspective make it look like big but its the correct size.

No time to make images with more samples because im on my laptop.
I have some problems in my real life so I can't make more updates today :(

HDRI used is Octane studio n°3

Spheres inside the object will give you the bubbles. Just make sure that the object you want the bubbles inside are the same mesh as the spheres. They have to be the same mesh if you understand what i mean

i think we should drop the 'nose',
it looks a bit silly, like a clown-nose :)

I can do the uvw mapping for you, if you like. I can also create a lightrig (when octane have mesh emitters)

 you only see a 'nose' because I imagined it and drew eyes

@radiance knows how helpful I was with developing the Indigo ball so I'll keep my thoughts to my self now :D
