after playing around a bit more, I realized that when I activate 4x4 up-sampling, if I switch from the attribute editor over to the channel box panel when they are docked, it fixes the skewed viewport, and then if I switch back the panels, it skews the viewport again.

So its not actually the up-sampling, it seems its more like it gets distorted when it has to resize the viewport.

I've told you what's the problem - this bug only shows up when the requested output image's size is not a multiply of the current upsampling. In the case of Maya-viewport rendering the Maya's viewport size is dynamic and its size is changed whenever Maya's UI is changed...
I've reminded the engine team today one more time about this bug... Not sure if they have time to fix it currently...
