This is the recommended thread for downloading, and posting any questions, suggestions or support queries for OctaneRender for Rhino - TEST and STABLE releases.

SOLUTIONS TO COMMON ISSUES

1) Make sure your NVIDIA drivers are up to date.

2) Make sure you have the latest Rhino Service Release installed.

3) If you get an "Error Starting Octane - Could not load OctaneWrapper?.dll" error when installing the plugin, this is generally due to not having the latest NVIDIA drivers installed (so see Solution 1) above.

4) If you get a "Package not compatible" error when installing the plugin, please follow the instructions at https://wiki.mcneel.com/rhino/5/rhi-problems -> "Package not compatible".

5) If you get an "Unable to load OctaneRenderForRhino.rhp plugin: initialization failed" error when starting the plugin, delete the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\McNeel\Rhinoceros\6.0\Plug-Ins\F109BD23-4CF3-4C0B-9F83-06BE474B0152 and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\McNeel\Rhinoceros\6.0\Plug-Ins\F109BD23-4CF3-4C0B-9F83-06BE474B0152 registry entries using Regedit and then reinstall the plugin. If this does not resolve the problem, delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\McNeel\Rhinoceros from the registry and then reinstall the plugin.

6) If you get an "OctaneRender for Rhino not activated." error when rendering via the Rhino->Render->Render menu, open the plugin Setup window via the OctaneRenderForRhino command, or by adding the plugin panel to the Rhino Properties window as per https://docs.otoy.com/RhinoH/RhinoPluginManual.htm#Rhinoceros/InstallationofthePluginintoRhinoceros.htm.

7) Cuda error 999 - failed to load shader code: Multiple definition of 'cpSptStatistics' in 'cuda_teturemode' means that your plugin version is too old for the Nvidia drivers that are installed, so update to the latest version of the plugin

8) The Octane Viewport does not appear after clicking the Open Viewport button. This occurs when the Viewport was previous closed on a second monitor, or off the current screen. To resolve this, delete the plugin configuration file config.xml as per https://docs.otoy.com/RhinoH/RhinoPluginManual.htm#Rhinoceros/Configuration.htm.

9) LiveDb materials containing OSL nodes will not load into the plugin correctly. The plugin does not currently support OSL Projection or Texture nodes. Instead, copy these Livedb materials into the clipboard from Octane Standalone and paste them into a NodeGraph material in the plugin.

10) Where is the macOS version? I have done quite a lot of work investigating a macOS version of the plugin for Rhino. Unfortunately the macOS UI that Rhino uses offers far fewer controls than the Windows version, and I don't think it's possible to replicate the tree structure that the plugin uses in Windows. So I think it would require a complete re-write of the plugin in order for it to work on macOS, and I don't think that would be possible in the near future.

Rhino Version
This version requires Rhino6, SR34 or later or Rhino 7 version 7.4.21078.1001 or later, on Windows. MacOSX is not currently supported.

To use this version, you need a GPU of compute model 3.0 or higher. Support for Fermi GPUs (like GTX 4xx and 5xx) has been dropped. Also make sure you use a driver of version 451 or higher.

Network Rendering
For Network Rendering, you must use the Octane slave release from the Octane Standalone installer which matches the exact Octane version of the plugin you are using.

Support Issues
If you have a support issue, pls provide the following information:
- Operating System (ie. Win XP, Vista, 7, 8)
- 32 or 64 bit
- Amount of RAM
- Graphics Card(s) - model (ie. GTX 580, 3GB)
- Nvidia driver version
- Rhino version and build number
- OctaneRender for Rhino version (ie. 2.0.10.8)

Current STABLE build (Octane 2020.2.3)

Previous STABLE build (Octane 2020.1.5)

Release Notes

2020.2.3.126 (19-Apr-2021)
- Fixed lock-up on Rhino startup when using the <AlternativeSearchPathFolders> option in the config.xml file

2020.2.3.125 (10-Apr-2021)
- Compiled with Octane 2020.2.3
- There is a separate Rhino7 version of the plugin now. You can therefore not run the Rhino7 version on Rhino6. If you find that Rhino7 loads the previous version of the plugin, delete the following registry entries, and reinstall the plugin: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\McNeel\Rhinoceros\7.0\Plug-Ins\f109bd23-4cf3-4c0b-9f83-06be474b0152
and Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\McNeel\Rhinoceros\7.0\Plug-ins\f109bd23-4cf3-4c0b-9f83-06be474b0152
- RHINO7 ONLY: Added a potential fix for viewtopic.php?f=41&t=75280. This fix requires the latest version of Rhino, and as I don't have a 4k monitor, I was unable to test the effectiveness of this fix. Please note there is an outstanding issue with this as described in my latest post at https://discourse.mcneel.com/t/rhino-ma ... /115745/13
- EXPERIMENTAL: Added support for alternative texturemap link paths. To do this, add <AlternativeSearchPathFolders>C:\path_to_my_first_search_path; \path_to_another_search_path</AlternativeSearchPathFolders> to your config.xml file. Multiple search paths can be specified, separated by a ';'. The last missing texturemaps folder will be searched prior to the alternative texturemap link paths.

2020.2.0.124 (10-Feb-2021)
- Compiled with Octane 2020.2
- Added the following Octane 2020.2 nodes: Null Material, Chaos Texture, Channel Inverter, Channel Merger, Channel Mapper, Channel Picker, Composite Texture
- Added the Octane 2020.2 feature Nested Dielectrics
- The following Octane 2020.2 features are NOT implemented: OCIO, AOV/compositing nodes, Multi-scatter tools
- The OctaneChangePinValue command will now also work for FLOAT values with 3 sliders. In this case, the Y value is set. So for example, you can set the IBL image rotation with "OctaneChangePinValue environment:texture:projection:transform:rotation 45"

2020.1.5.123 (27-Nov-2020)
- Fixed crash introduced in release 20201.5.122 when rendering block instances

2020.1.5.122 (9-Sep-2020)
- Compiled with Octane 2020.1.5

2020.1.4.122 (28-Jul-2020)
- Compiled with Octane 2020.1.4
- Experimental support for the Octane Quad, Sphere Lights. Go into the Setting windows and enable the Convert Rhino Lights checkbox. Mouse-over this setting for details.
- Octane node "Groups" are now displayed in the Settings and Material tree.
- Added the OctaneLoadBackgroundImage and OctaneClearBackgroundImage command (this is untested at this stage)

2020.1.0.121 (29-Apr-2020)
- Compiled with Octane 2020.1

2020.1.0.120 (17-Apr-2020)
- Compiled with Octane 2020.1 RC3
- Mesh items which have Live Geometry ON, but are NOT Block Instances or Block Definitions will now have A_USER_INSTANCE_IDS set to a non -1 value, so the Instance Range texture can now be used on these items
- Fix slow scene loading speed introduced in 2019.1.0.112 with the introduction of Clipping Plane support

2020.1.0.119 (20-Mar-2020)
- Compiled with Octane 2020.1 RC2

2020.1.0.118 (29-Jan-2020)
- Fixed bug where saving to multi-layer EXR files was not working

2020.1.0.117 (24-Jan-2020)
- Compiled with Octane 2020.1 XB3

2020.1.0.116 (13-Dec-2019)
- Compiled with Octane 2020.1 XB1
- Added Kosek-Wilke Daylight Model
- Added the Hair Material node
- Added the Random Walk medium (NOTE: If you enable Lock Step Length Pins on any of the Mediums, the Volume Shadow Ray Step Length will override the Volume Step Length)
- Added saving to the ACES EXR format. Saving all render passes from the Viewport now gives the option to select an EXR format.
- The OctaneSaveRenderPasses command now has an option parameter "format" - allowing you to specify the EXR save format, (16/32 bit, tonemapped/linear, ACES)
- Octane 2020.1 Quad and Sphere Lights are not yet implemented
- Fixed issue where the toolbar icons and tree controls were not scaling correctly on 4k monitors
- Fixed issue where the version checker would crash if the firewall was blocking the plugin

Hi - I just installed that version on my PC and it installed and run OK. Do you have the latest Nvidia drivers installed? Does Octane Standalone 2020.1 XB1 render for you?

Hi Paul,

I'm having some trouble saving to a multi-layer EXR from Rhino with the 2020.1.0.116 plugin. I get this message and it doesn't save the file. I'm able to save a regular EXR without any issues, but not layers. I've tried saving it to different drives and in every case it only references the drive letter in the error message and not the full file path. It's also referring to the image as the drive letter which is further confusing. I'm currently trying to export the denoised image and a cryptomatte. Any ideas?

Thanks for the help,
Travis

Hi Travis. I could not reproduce your problem. Can you please provide a sample scene and the exact set of steps required to reproduce the error.

Thanks

Hi Paul, Just wondering are they any updates for regular license?
The latest version of the Regular license plugin is Octane 4.05 - at https://render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=69577&start=40. I would not anticipate releasing any further Octane 4 builds of the plugin, so I would suggest moving to an Octane 2019 license for continued updates.

Thanks

Hi Paul,

Thanks for getting back and sorry for the delay in my reply. I get the error dialog when attempting to save a layered EXR from the corresponding icon at the top of the Octane IPR window in any of the format options (32, 16, ACES, tonemapped or not). It gives me a file explorer window that I can type the file name into, but after hitting save it presents the error. I just tried deleting the plugin from Rhino and I updated to the latest .117 version of the plugin but that didn't solve it for me. Do you have any ideas as to how to either reset things or how I could provide you with any technical info? I'm also running the latest studio drivers for my Nvidia 2080Ti (Studio 441.66).

I tried using Rhino's rendering window, but I don't see any options related to saving out the render as a layered EXR and I'm honestly not certain that it even saves out EXR's as the save dialog doesn't list it as a file format.

Thanks again for the help,
Travis
