advice on 4gpu build Tweet

Hi,

Not sure where to post this please feel free to correct me.
I work for a vfx company and currently only use cpu render node.
I want to build a 4GPU machine to test out octane.

CPU: AMD Threadripper 2950X 3.5 GHz 16-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3 82.52 CFM CPU Cooler
Motherboard: MSI X399 SLI PLUS ATX TR4 Motherboard
Memory: Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 64 GB (4 x 16 GB) DDR4-2933
Storage: Samsung 970 Evo 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive
Case: Corsair Air 540 ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA G2 1600 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

I will then add in the 4 GTX 1080s I have spare.
All the research I have done makes me believe this will work and use the 4 gpus optimally.
Looking for confirmation or to be told why this wont work and what I need to get 4 gpus into one machine.

Yes this will work fine if You have blower style 1080tis.

Overall, at least for OctaneRender You do not need this high end build if You plan to use it for OctaneRender only, but it will work fine.

I also have in mind a similar build, needing to utilize the CPU power of a ThreadRipper 2990WX for 1 application as well as GPU strength for octane etc.

In regards to the longevity of an investment for the build, would x4 - RTX 2080 Super hybrids running on a, Gigabyte X399 AORUS XTREME EATX TR4 Motherboard, suffice ?

I'd love to go for a custom water loop, but I will need to ship this build internationally twice within 1 year so for dismantling reasons I'd prefer the hybrids contained in boxes...

Best bang for my buck? Any overall advice would be greatly appreciated.

best bang for the buck is to go aircooled, also why not to choose smaller case + good mobo and space out two more powerful GPUs like 2080ti? With a bit of planing You can get beastly machine that is compact enough.

another question, is it right time to go for threadripper if we are waiting for update soon? I would say no. How fast do You need new system?

As for a time frame, I need to have a build order by the end of December. I recently heard rumor AMD is revealing and releasing on Nov. 4? Definitely now worth the wait I imagine.

Thinking about what you said, I noticed the 2070 super is almost a 2080 (same chip) and then if investing into the 2080ti would be a good trade off for longevity into the future?

Im curious if you've seen any heating issue / performance loss on long hours rendering, with closely stacked x4 ASUS 2080ti blower cards directly on 1 mobo? Once Im settled id throw the entire rig underwater.

Also, any build info floating around on the 2080ti BEAST you posted on twitter? You could almost pack that into carry-on luggage with room for socks. lol Thanks again for the help, much appreciated.

if You use ASUS Turbo blowers in well ventilated case You can easily avoid thermal throttling, with slight fan curve tweak.

However if You choose different cards, blowers but with backplates, You can loose half of performance

as for watercooling parts I can try to write some details breakdown if You want to replicate. As every piece is out of the shelf part You should have no problem to replicate.

I have the same CPU and a motherboard S-TR4 X399 ASUS ROG STRIXX399-E.
This rig I bought has had 1x RTX2080TI 11GB ASUS.

From old pc, I have 3x Gforce GTR 1080TI. My intention was to take these cards later to the new board.

Now my pc dealer says to me, that I can only take two from my GTR1080TI`s to the board with the RTX2080.

So I was a little surprised that you can take 4gpu. I have no knowledge about the exact details to handle more
gpu`s on the same board.
Perhaps ther is a difference between our motherboards I cant see in the specifications we have posted.
I should wait with the modification still I get more information about my abilities.

Your card is not the same, it's just based on the same (x399) chip. Among other important difference Your have differently spaced PCIe slots that physically do not allow 4x double slot cards being placed..

Thanks Tom for the advice. Looking at the new 3970x I think water cooling will be the best option.

Hearing about how much heat 4 RTX 2080ti with a 3970x will produce a large external radiator might be the only way to go.

I put together a post of a build in mind on the Hardware for Octane Page. Would love to look over a parts list for compact build Im sure others would find it as a treat aswell!! Thanks again for the help.
