Hi, I'm a bit confused as to which Octane version I should be downloading. What is the difference between 2019.1 and 4.05? I'm using R20 C4D.

And what is the answer? This is not a very helpful answer. Because I used 2019 and I had some issues and version 4 was stable. Also if you look at the plugin number it is kind of confusing. 2018 versions, then version 4, then 2018 again ending with 2019.

Hi,

version 4 is old version.

version 2018.x is internally version 5

version 2019 is the most newer version.

The answer aoktar gave you is not a bad answer, there are a big number of changes between versions, there is a lot of information in the forums about the changes between them in each main post.

in each plug in release aoktar shares a number of links with this information, documentation, also provides a list of changes between the versions and sub releases.

Thank you helping me out! Hopefully, everybody doesn't expect me to be a support guy from a developer. Explanations are in the link as you said and I cannot give answers in-depth for every question. I'm just trying to give quick tips to where to look. I'd not work on plugin if I do that.

Thank you for the replies! I was looking at the change log for 2019 and was wondering what the difference is between layered material vs blend material?

the blend material helps you mixing the various materials to get complex ones using masks.

the layer material is more like a custom material that helps you build a material playing with its different characteristics and layering them one of top of the other, e.g a diffuse brdf base and over it a metallic coat and on top of it a specular coat, picture it like when that super high end car brands paint their cars, they use layer over layer over layer of paints to get to those awesome colors and effects for their cars finishes.

there is an example in the stand alone post for 2019 that they recreate the bdfr of existing materials viewtopic.php?f=24&t=72584

Hmm. So currently I make car shaders with a mix material between a metal and a paint. Would it look more realistic layering them as would in real life. I'm having a bit of trouble wrapping my head around when to use a layered material over a mix.

I think is the same thing, layered gets you more control as you can stack up multiple of the same characteristic (e.g multiple specular layers with different values) but also I think you can do it with the blend material.

also internally could have a better memory footprint as the render engine don't have to calculate each material, instead it calculates each layer that is just a little part of a material, don't take my word for it as I don't have any knowledge about this and I'm not a developer of the render engine.
