Composite Material Hard Crash

I am using 4.05r3 with c4d r20 on OSX.

What's the maximum number of sub materials I can use in a composite material? I have a very complex label to render that has 11 inks, foils and varnishes. I have managed to use 10 x sub materials, but when I try to increase this to 11, Octane crashes and takes my entire system with it.

Now I can't even open the node editor for the composite material I created with 10 sub materials, c4d stops responding every time.

We're still on Octane 4.03 for C4D R19, Mac OS, but yes, I can confirm that in my experience, it will crash with more than ten Sub Material inputs to a Blend Material. Type 11 into the "Number of Materials" field of a Blend Material node, hit enter, and instant crash, even with an otherwise completely empty scene.

Fortunately for us, it just takes down C4D, not the whole system. In our case, it was easy enough to restructure the shader to work with those limits, and we rarely go anywhere close to ten Subs.

Yes typing 11 in causes a crash.

To get the job done I have subscribed for a month to Corona for c4d. I have to say it is very impressive. Actually on my old 12 core cheese grater it's competing with Octane for speed. The fact that it hasn't crashed once all day helps, but mainly it's faster because it doesn't depend time 'copying document' and 'generating materials' over and over.

I love Octane but it's still well flaky in my opinion.

Oh, yeah! We've got a 12 core cheese grater Mac running AfterEffects 2014 (the last time it supported parallel frame multi-threading), and it's still faster for most AE work than much newer hardware and later versions of AE. There's a lot to be said for GPUs, but throwing a boatload of CPUs at a problem is not out of the running for many tasks and situations.

But I'm probably just an old man shaking my fist at a cloud.

No need to send you a scene, if I create a new c4d document, then create a new Octane Composite Material, then type 11 into the number of materials, Octane crashes, then if I don't immediately force quit c4d, the whole mac crashes 20 secs later.
