any updates, developments on this? atm i cannot use the denoiser feature at all as i am always rendering higher resolution stills... hope this can get fixed somehow. unfortunately i have no videocard with larger VRAM in my studio to see if this would help at all on my mac pro workstation with C4D. all my 7 video cards are nvidia 980ti with 6G of VRAM. the mac pro which is also the workstation with C4D has only one card on board. in my crash cases, there is always enough VRAM free when rendering, out of core is never used.

Hi,
the issue with large resolution is not in VRAM, but in system RAM, try to upgrade to 64GB or more.
You van check it by slightly reducing resolution until you are able to render.

i have 48G of RAM in my macpro and never use more than 12-16G when rendering with octane, so this seems not the problem to me, honestly... large resolution means in this case from 3000x2000 to 5000x3500 pixel, which isn't gigantic. after different experiments, seems it does not crash only with 600x400 pixel, but i didn't test a lot with this size so i can't be sure it will crash here as well. problem with these tests is that it takes time to repair and recover SSD (just in case, as it was hard shutdown) and restart to test.

cheers

markus

Hi markus,
if you are able to render at lower resolution, it sounds not enough RAM to me, but difficult to say without the scene.
How many passes have you enabled?
Maybe not all 48GB are working correctly.

RAM is definitely OK and is also of EEC type. also, i am using other applications like formz, photoshop, lightroom, after effects and never since i bought this mac i had such a shutdown failure or any processor / RAM relates issues. as reported, the first time it started with first release of the plugin with denoiser for lightwave last year. since then i never could render larger images with denoiser without a shut down. the lightwave plugin developer also thought that it could be a core issue. in fact, this happens with the octane app as well, so it is probably not even plugin related. it also is not network dependent and it also happens on all my other similar equipped macs. i also tested a few times on the hp workstation - which also has 48G RAM (and runs windows 7 pro) and in this case octane crashed (but at least i didn't get cold shutdown). all machines have nvidia 980ti cards.

i ususally kept denoiser settings at default and tried both denoising during rendering and at end of frame. in both cases machine shuts down immediately when denoising process runs. usually i render with PT to some 1000 - 5000 final samples.

Hi markus,
when AI Denoiser kicks in, you have two peaks, in both RAM and power consumption.
Probably the Win 7 machine does not have enough RAM only, while your Mac Pro is having issues also with power consumption.
How are you powering 980ti?
I have a Mac Pro 64GB + 2x 1070 that has no issues with large resolutions and denoiser, if RAM is enough.
But 1070 needs far less power than 980ti.

power consumption peak is higher when denoising large images? do you externally power your two 1070 cards? if so, i might be interested to get an insight to be able to configure my mac as yours... thank you markus

Hi,
I have stopped to need to use an external PSU, when I have switched from 780 to 1070 on that machine.
How are you powering 980ti?

i am powering with the internal PSU. i have a macvidcards flashed 980ti and the seller told me that there should be no power issue at all. also, i am using a lot of GPU based software (vray, after effects, lightroom, and a lot of GPU based plugins) since i installed the card (maybe 2 years ago) with this setup and never had any issues. just curious, are you powering 2 x 1070 cards internally with native mac PSU?

If I remember well, 980ti is 6pin + 8pin, while Mac Pro is only 6pin + 6pin, so you should need to use an external PSU, or get more power from the HDD Sata ports:
https://www.amazon.it/15pin-Express-ali ... _mk_it_IT=ÅMÅŽÕÑ&keywords=sata+to+6pin&qid=1558968097&s=gateway&sr=8-5
I’m using 6pin + 6pin transformed into 8pin for one 1070, and 6pin Sata + 6pin Sata into 8pin for the second 1070.
