I was wondering, why there was no image input in the properties panel.

As you may have noticed, the inputs are relative to Cycles, not Octane.
It's not possible to choose Octane nodes from the Material Editor for now (what you see are Cycles nodes, which can't be used with Octane). We'll check if that's something possible to be implemented, maybe in Octane for Blender 2.8.
