Mixed render: B&W and color

I'm sure some of you have seen the artistic photo style before where you have a mostly black & white photo, but some elements of it are color, giving that great contrast. I am wondering how one might render that, so you can set most materials as black and white, but leave some with color. I know you can edit it in Photoshop or similar after, but I was hoping for a solution that just produced the result I was looking for.

You can do this by rendering the Material Id pass, then using it to mask the materials you want B&W in Photoshop. Remember to install the Octane Photoshop plugin to read the multi-later EXR first.

Okay, got it all set up, but unsure how to use the masking properly in Photoshop. Particularly is the problem area where I have hair (which I want to become B&W) covering certain clothing (which I want to remain colored) . Never used a color masking like this before, so am not sure how to use it in Photoshop.

And on a related thought, have you thought of making a short series of videos on what each of the render passes can be used for and how? It would really add to the value. Heck, I'd be willing to help make them!

It is covered in the manual at the page https://docs.otoy.com/StandaloneH_STA/StandaloneManual.htm#StandaloneSTA/RenderPasses.htm and it's sub-topics.
