Laptop Specs?

Hello! I am looking to get a new laptop to learn CGI on, and want to use it while commuting for modeling in Cinema 4D and previewing in Octane, then when I get home/work I can finish my render on the real desktops.
I'd like something fast, so I'm gonna stick with the 8th generation processors, max out the ram, get 500+gb of storage...my question is what GPU? Obviously the higher the better, but also the pricier.

Could I comfortably get away with a 1050 or 1060, or should I really be looking at the 1070 and 1080s?

Thank you so so much! :D

hi, Nina Marie.

Overall the faster is the better, but as You already noticed they would get more expensive & chunkier (not so fun to lug around). Overall something like 1070 gives You plenty of power for learning & performing tests also those are packed into reasonably thin laptops since they do not need that much of cooling. There are also laptops that have dual GPU configurations, but it's far from fun to lug those, as they weight a lot + You some need to have two external power bricks.

the best would be to test OctaneRender on the desktop You have - measure Octanebench & then when You will be picking a laptop, You can have a clear idea how fast Your portable device would be. I this forum, there a guys who started from something like GTX460 or even older that had miserable performance & like a bit over 1 GB of VRAM, so when You consider those even slightly thinner laptops with 1070 & 8 GB of VRAM they do seem like monsters in terms of performance for Octanerender =D

Thank you so much for responding!!
Looking at the difficulty of using the non-existing middle mouse button on the trackpads of these laptops (when I'm home I can use a mouse but I'll be using this on the go a lot), I'm seeing the benefits of getting a touch screen laptop, but they all come with 1050ti or 1060s.

Besides the GPU, I'm either sacrificing 32GB ram for 16GB, or I'm sacraficing the latest 8th gen of i7 to the 7th gen of i7. Looking at the New Dell XPS (1050ti), Surfacebook 2, or Razer Blade's 4K touch laptop. What would you do?

Thank you!
