Hi!

This is a test build of OctaneRender™ 3.0 for Houdini™ compiled with the Octane 3.08 RC1 core. This release is available for the Houdini 15.5/16.0/16.5 latest production builds on Windows x64, Linux gcc4.8 and OSX 10.11. This plugin is also compatible with Houdini 15.5/16.0/16.5 Indie. In this case, the plugin will have a 4k limited resolution while rendering sequences, and the scene export and cloud rendering features disabled.

Apologies for the delayed release, especially for the delay of the proper plugin build for the latest Houdini 16.5 production builds. It wasn't planned, but with this release, we should be back to the normal release schedule.

Notes:
- Since we have to use CUDA toolkit 9.1 for that, you may have to update your graphics driver.
- This build supports all the new Octane 3.08 RC1 features, but be aware that the OSL feature is not ready yet. The OSL VOP nodes are there and work loading any osl file, but the GUI parameters and input pins for the osl shader are not available in the VOP nodes yet. This feature will be ready for the next plugin build.

* NEW PLUGIN AND OCTANE FEATURES:

- OSL UV projection node.
- Improved clay rendering.
- Additional response curves in the imager node. "sRGB" is the new default one.
- Custom LUT support in tone-mapping imager node. New "Octane LUT" node.
- Replaced the bool parameter "Gamma before response" in the imager node with the new enum parameter "Order".
- Added light pass ID to toon lights.
- Improved rendering of displacement of instances with very large or very small scale factors.
- Displacement of connected triangles are not torn apart anymore due to different vertex normals of shared vertices.
- Changed the roughness of the new microfacet BRDF models to match the behaviour of other renders.
- Implemented caustic blur for new microfacet BRDF models.
- Improved the tangent vector calculation of meshes with none or degenerated UV geometry to have fewer visible discontinuities.
- Houdini Indie sequences rendering resolution limit updated to 4K.
- Added support for Volta. Since we have to use CUDA toolkit 9.1 for that, you may have to update your graphics driver.
- Added a light direction pass which estimates the direction from where most of the light is coming.
- Added an irradiance beauty pass.
- Added the "Irradiance mode" to the direct lighting, path tracing and PMC kernel nodes.
- Added 5 volume passes which record properties of volumes, the environment medium and specular materials with IOR of 1 and transmission of 1. These will not be recorded in the SSS anymore.
- Added wavelength dependendent IOR for to the metallic material. There are now three different modes you can choose from: Artistic, IOR + color, RGB IOR.
- Added sheen to the glossy and the metallic material nodes.
- Added support for the 2nd and 3rd UV channels in displacement mapping.
- Added the "Displacement direction" to the displacement node which allows you to choose which displacement vectors should be used.
- Improved accuracy of Fresnel of the metallic meterial.
- Improved the RGB to spectrum conversion, which slightly reduces the noise for highly saturated RGB colours (especially when used in scattering / absorption media).
- Trying to improve displacement mapping in various corner cases and to improve handling of degenerated UV triangles in displacement.
- Plugin material and render target HDAs updated to expose the latest Octane 3.08 features.

* PLUGIN BUGS FIXED:
- Fixed the Octane Light scale parameter on Houdini 16.5.
- Fixed an IPR problem updating several shader nodes, like the noise shader.

* OCTANE BUGS FIXED:
- Fixed the darkening fall off on Ward BRDF materials.
- Fixed missing clamping of some material channels to sensible values. (Since with 3.08 we removed all clamping of values in texture nodes)
- Fixed incorrect assignment of texture references on Fermi GPUs, breaking scenes with image textures in certain circumstances (e.g. the box benchmark scene).
- Fixed support for GPUs with compute model 2.1
- Fixed baking of triangles with moving vertices.
- Fixed border mode "clamp" of image textures.
- Fixed issue that "GI clamp" isn't applied to light passes.
- Fixed incorrect evaluation of mix textures in the normal channel.
- Fixed incorrect ambient shadow in the render layer shadow pass if no environment is used.
- Fixed normals on displacement triangles if the triangles are small compared to the displacement map.
- Fixed the artefacts around displaced triangles with a high amount of distortion in the displacement normals.
- Fixed crash when an instance colour texture is used.
- Fixed incorrect clipping of hair segments in some corner cases.
- Fixed incorrect shader data transmission to net render slaves, causing them to render red.
- Fixed missing reset of net render slave when master disconnects.
- Fixed normal orientation of displaced triangles if the UV map is mirrored.
- Fixed missing GI clamp of beauty render passes.
- Fixed vertically flipped order in the instance colour texture node.
- Fixed incorrect evaluation of mix textures in the normal channel.
- Fixed sampling of the Ward BRDF.
- Fixed incorrect rendering of gradient texture with a control point set at 1.0.
- Fixed tangent vector calculation on sphere primitives.
- Fixed corner cases in metallic reflection with IOR set to (0, 0i).
- Fixed various issues of OSL over network rendering.
- Fixed the default projection for procedural texture nodes to use world space (as in 3.07).
- Fixed default colours of the triplanar texture inputs.
- Fixed the object space mode of texture projections.

hi,

Thanks for the new build. It seems that if I make changes to the Imager it restarts the IPR. That never happened before. Even adjusting the exposure or saturation restarts the IPR.

Hi,

Sorry, but I can't reproduce this problem here. Are you sure that you are working with the latest plugin build 3.08.0.7? This sounds to me like a problem of the previous release 3.08.0.0 ... please, check the "About" window or the log file to be sure.

I found another issue. I don't know if it's a bug with the plugin or with octane core but dispersion seems to be broken.

This is an Octane core bug, as far as I know. It will be fixed in the next Octane/plugins builds.
