Volume FOG request

Hi Guys,

I did some test with the volume fog based on the V-ray scene of this feature https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQMnNM6q5YM I fell would be great to have a extra option,I realise sometimes we want just the fog from the direct lights with no GI if I set no Diffuse bounce I get the result of only direct lights would be good to have a option like "ignore GI" this would be a great option still good but I guess this way we could have a quick and clean fog and enough quality for us.

Right know we render as a pass with no GI to add in comp, but this would make the workflow quicker and get straight from the render.

Please let me know if is possible?

Cheers,
JO

++++1
I hope otoy will make features like a simple volume fog from light without any mediums etc, spot light etc. I know their render engine is very real life like but all these features like other render engines have is a must

The problem with Octane is that it cheats in many ways to have this stuff.

Cheats with fog by having volumes (which is still very hard to use properly unless youre very advanced with Octane)

Cheats with textures, using Mix textures and portals, etc

Cheats with AO -- using dirt shader to fake it

There is so much faking done to avoid the actual HEAD on issues that its ridiculous.

But yes, bump plz

Hi, Can show an example with the settings?

Hi WG,

yes of corse, so is all about the scene scale, for me I use maya plug so 1 maya unit is equal of 1cm buy by default they set 1m (pointless default settings, I know Octane standalone is 1 unit=1meter)
so I set scenes scale "0.01" for me at the sunsky node the medium radius was "10" (by default is et 1 one other pointless settings cause doesn't match on the real life size)
As volume setting pretty simple settings, I going to put a list here:

Scene scale on render settings: "0.01" (cause maya works at cm)
octaneSunSky settings : a strong power for the light bounce so power "20" with day light.
Medium radius at "10"

and the volume node I set at:

Absorption "0" with the tag "invert abs" activated
Scattering set "1"
phase "0" ( this setting many people was changing but is all about scale to me I didn't use because my scene scale is right with my medium radius)
and Scale at volume node I set 0.1
vol step len at "4".

This all my settings I will get the scene exported at standalone for you to see. I did a lot contrast and post-FX at imager

Cheers,
JO

Here the Orbx scene,

So as I said I did some mess on the imager/postprocessor to match Vray's example, but you can see the Idea, Usually I render separated and comp then so I can have a volume without GI to get look ( I know is fake but render faster)
here is set in one. Of course is a quick test.

Cheers,
JO

Thanks JO for the example.

I hope that in the new version of the octane 3,07 the fake Godrays/volume light will be fast .
