Advice on best single GPU for a monthly subscriber

Hi Guys,

Just purchased monlthy sub of Octane with C4d plugin. Looking for advice on upgrading my current setup.
Current setup is i7 4970K, 24GB DDR3 Ram GTX780Ti...
Budget is anything up to four hundred and fifty pounds at the moment. As a Uni student the monthly subscription only allows two GPU's.
Would it be worth purchasing two cards and have them in SLI? Say two 980's if I can get the second hand? Any advice would be appreciated! :D :D

Hi AJM0123,
two second hand GTX 980 ti are a very good choice, but don't connect them in SLI, or at least disable the Multi GPU option when working with Octane. If SLI is enabled you could have some issues with VRAM.
If 3GB of VRAM are enough for you, you could start by adding another second hand 780ti and double your actual rendering power.

Hi bepeg4d,

Firstly thanks for the response, as to why I would not have them in SLI is this because it would only be using the VRAM of one card? So just have them sitting independently?
As for having 980ti I think that is what I would like to get (best to save for two of these?), however I can pick up a 780ti on ebay for less than one hundred and fifty pounds. Maybe the best option till I get more fluent with Octane?

Buy buying another 780 would this double the speed of my renders in theory? Thanks,

Andrew

Hi Andrew,
Octane always needs to load the entire scene on each GPU, so SLI is not an useful option.
About GTX 780ti, yes, if you add another one of them to you system, you are roughly doubling your rendering speed reaching 200 points in OctaneBench.

Wile adding two 980ti you shoud reach a score of 250, but you also double the available VRAM from 3GB to 6GB.
If 3GB is enough for you, you can stay with 780ti for now, waiting to update with more powerful GPUs later on.
When you add more than one GPU to your system, be careful about the form factor of the card, classic layout like Titan gpus is the way to go, even better hybrid or hydro cooling. In short, avoid the cards with custom design and more than one fan. If your cards got overheating, you loose rendering speed.

I'm no expert but it seems 980ti's are the most popular choice due to cuda cores and cost.

Quad EVGA GTX 980ti Hybrids due to the liquid cooling fan, they apparently keep your video cards cool enough and you don't have to mess with custom liquid cooling. It's definitely needed as I'm currently using an external 980ti non-hybrid on my Mac.. After 10 minutes of using Octane, you could cook an egg on the backplate.

Like I said I'm no expert and just speaking purely from research into building my own PC rig for octane.

Hi bepeg4d,

Thank you for the reply again.

Firstly do the cards have to be identical models? For example could I have a 780Ti 3gb and 780 3gb? Or say a 980Ti and 980? I am assuming they have to be the same however thought I would ask the question.
Also I could purchase two 980's this week with the money I have but it would be better to get two 980ti's wouldn't it as they have more VRAM as opposed to the 980? This would mean saving more but it would be well worth it wouldn't it?

Thanks,

Andrew

Hi Andrew,
Octane is not picky and you can mix different Nvidia architectures together with different VRAM amount. In general, it is better to have the same quantity of VRAM in all the cards of the system, but, if you don't have a dedicated card for display only, you can use the greater one for both display and Octane, if the difference is not so great.
980 are very good cards, but obviously 980ti are even better with more VRAM and a bit more of speed, 2x980 = 200, 2x980ti = 250, is up to you if the cost is worth or not.
As mikeadamwood has said, the best is the hybrid version, but there are also 980 and 970 in hybrid version, and even Titan X.
