Qs from a VR noob

Turns out I don't even know enough to understand the basic info I've found after searching the forums. :)

I own several licenses of Octane and use it daily. I'm intrigued by the possibility of a VR option for showing clients their rendering. I'm probably not interested in animation. I'm thinking about either a stereo single shot, or a spherical still image.

Do I need "OctaneVR" that I keep hearing about, or just native Octane, or something else?

What viewing format is best... Google Cardboard? GearVR? Oculus? Something else?

FWIW, I have a couple of Note4's.

Thanks!

Octane license you already have, has everything you need.

GearVR is the best at the moment.

- set camera to panoramic and set it to cube map
- set resolution to 18432x1536
- set stereo to be side by side
- set "keep up right"
- render

Awesome. What about after the render? Is the rendered image -> GearVR a simple process?

Yes, just copy your image to the ORBX folder and thats about all there's to it.

It is also good to take a measure tool in your modelling software, create a box, or use Daz figure, resize this model that is about the height of average male. 180 cm seems to work okay. Model everything in your scene according to this measure piece. Everything in VR shows real world scales, so if you model a spoon at one meter, it will show in VR as one meter spoon. This is quite important. Also, leave about one meter diameter space around camera, because close to camera objects are painful to look at with GearVR.

If you want to to increase the stereo effect, set IPD from standard 65mm to 85 mm. Resize the measure tool to 2 meters tall. Model everything according to this. Increased height will be compensated by the increased IPD, so the scene doesn't look exaggerated in sizes. Only the stereo effect is better. This issue becomes moot in the future with lightfield when you can adjust the IPD from the HMD. It's just a cool "hack" in my opinion at the moment.

Anxious to try. Just have to decide whether there is enough client demand to justify it.

I think you'll knock them out.

It is hard to get back to 2D stuff after VR.
