Users opinions on Octane for Imac ?

Hi guys,

I'm currently testing the Octane demo, and I have to admit that live rendering is awesome. It totally changes the workflow and I'd really like to invest in 3 licenses for my company.

However, we are currently running on imac 27' with nvidia 680M 2G and 780M 4G ; on Yosemite as we had to upgrade macOS to install the latest Cuda drivers. (thank you apple) We work on C4D.

AND we had a lot of crashes in just a few days whereas our computers almost never crash usually. By crash, I mean a freeze of the whole computer. We also had several times lines (the buggy green and purple lines) here and there on the screen, maybe because octane is putting a lot of pressure on the GPU. Plus cinema4D froze several times, or appeared to be unstable (some views are flashing black when you want to display diffrent views) ...

So it begins to be a lot of problems and I am wondering : is Octane really a good call for an imac ? Should we stick to CPU rendering for now ?

Thank you for sharing your experience with me.

Francis

hi, flashing in multiview is a bug for recent versions and fixed by a alternative parameter which is added in 2.32.2 R5. it's a bug for OSX and strangely doesn't occurs on Windows version. But other issues are probably due Hardware or driver on Mac. As you may know that gpu rendering can stress very much gpus. These are uncontrollable factors by Octane and plugins.

hi,
the issue with iMac is that the internal GPU is already stressed by the big screen resolution leaving only few VRAM for rendering.
The only solution is to add external GPU via Thunderbolt. It's a bit tricky because is needed to modify some kext system files, but it works. There are some users here on the forum adopting this solution (with trash can dyson Mac Pro 2013 also), here you can find all the necessary info:

Since Apple is always a bit different, the easiest option for working with Octane on Mac is still the old Mac Pro 2009/2012 because is almost plug and play

...or a Hackintosh. Easier to get more than 1 GPU and more powerful PSU in a box of your own making than those tight old Mac Pros. And if you add a separate Windows boot disk there is always the option of rendering on the windows side should you find situations where Mac is giving you trouble.
