er, how do I get this to work?

I have an instance running in the aws thingy, but now am stuck - the stuff about GUID in the Otoy pdf is way over my little head...
workstation well past its sell-by-date, Vista 64 bit (!) with a pitiful amount of RAM, re-invigorated with a GX 590

3ds Max Design 2011 (have 2013 but can't be bothered to re-do all the UI), CS5, and that free z-brush program, whatever it's called

If they're GK104s, here's the Tom's Hardware benchmarks for them running Octane:

So what does this mean? How powerful are the G2's?
Can anybody say how fast this will be?

If it's going to take me a dollar an hour to render something in one hour I can do for free in four hours I'm not sure I'll pony up the cash. But if it's ten minutes for something I can do for free in four hours the calculus changes just a little.

It is about 75% the speed of a GTX 680. You need to think of it this way - instead of spending hundreds on a GPU, you rent one for ~$1 hour (including Octane, your PC, as well for that price). Once you are in the cloud - we can link many of these together for a final render, that is 10x faster, and only 10c for the price of that single dollar. We will tackling that in step 2, once we have users fully testing the current iteration.

In my testing the G2's are about 75% the speed of a GTX 680. We are currently supporting one GPU only for the first phase. We're working on enabling network rendering after that ASAP. Also - please boot up the ADSK AMI only if you want to get started quickly. The other AMIs are for advanced developers building web facing services, not for individual users or artists.

The ADSK AMI boots up fully unlocked in admin mode, and that is also the same AMI type we will be user for the OctaneCloud user facing service launching shortly (if all goes well).

Will it be possible that we have lets say an additional "Device" checkbox in our home plugins - like 3dsmax - named "Cloud Render" and once we click it the additional forepower is unleashed?

It's going to be easier to do that when 3DS Max is on the cloud already (next to those thousands of extra GPUs). This is possible to test with the ADSK AMI once we enable cloud rendering beyond one GPU in the plug-ins. If your Max exe is on your local machine, the best bet is to export to Alembic with 1.5 and then upload that to the cloud for final render - definitely possible to add that inside the plug-in itself, but that would have to be done on a per plug-in basis. We need to get 1.5 out first and see how the export->cloud approach works, and whether that is more useful than letting people work directly in Max on the cloud.

I think both are important. To use the cloud service for live render you now need > 3 Mbps bandwidth and have to be in EU or US (but going global next year). For 1920x1080 live streaming at 60 Hz, you should have a 12 Mbps line. We are working to move the codec to ORBX2/ORBX2D early next year, which will bring this down to 4 Mbps for 1920x1080p60, and 1.5 Mbps for 720p60.

There is an ORBX2 whitepaper online now:

As soon as network rendering is enabled (and there's some way to get my content to them, Alembic or other) I'm spinning up a bunch of these bad gender-unspecific-pronouns for a test! Very excited indeed.

We're almost ready to launch OctaneCloud which will manage the setup and boot process of the OTOY AMIs for you, and also provide render credits (in one hour increments ) that you will be able to use either towards live streams or offline renders (where you work offline, but send your Alembic 1.5 export data to the cloud for rendering).

We will provide a web desktop where you can drag and drop files into a virtual folder which bridges local and cloud file systems for you. We'll be announcing that soon.
