Octane 2.2 preview: murcielago videos on 2x GTX480 cards

Hey,

I made these with our upcoming Octane Render 2.2 version, after some forum users asked for videos of the performance of the GTX480.
These are live filmed footage (with a cheap pocket digital camera unfortunately) of me driving octane on a PC with:

2x GTX480 in multi-gpu mode (Asus EN GTX480 stock clock speed, both in PCI-E x16 slots on an Asus WS motherboard)
CPU: Core2 Quad i7 920
6GB RAM
Thermaltake 850 Watt PSU
Windows 7 x64

device manager setup image:

Device manager

The model is just over 4 million triangles and there are several large texture maps hooked up as diffuse, specular and bump maps.
In total it consumes about 1GB of video memory. (the memory indicators are broken as we haven't yet hooked them up in the new multi-gpu engine)

The way the multi-gpu rendering works in octane is that the navigation is faster, not the noise is less and the framerate stays the same, so if you were to have 4 GPUs it would navigate another 2x times faster.

All rendering, eg images and videos, is done at 1280 x 720 resolution with always 2x GTX480. (display used is 1920x1080 resolution)
No subsampling was used, it's per pixel rendered.

EDIT: Here's the new video that philbo made of all the videos with audio/music on youtube, it's really cool:

Here is a video of navigation with directlighting (default settings):

http://www.refractivesoftware.com/terre ... ghting.avi (175MB)

Here is a video of navigation and editing with directlighting (specular depth = 4, glossy depth = 3)

http://www.refractivesoftware.com/terre ... hting2.avi (137MB)

this is the image at the end of the render after 34 seconds:

directlighting at end of video 34 seconds render

Here is a video of navigation with pathtracing (maxdepth = 1024)

http://www.refractivesoftware.com/terre ... racing.avi (167MB)

and an image at the end of the pathtracing render after 35 seconds:

And last a video of the opengl viewport of the same model in blender, which is actually slower than the one in octane ?!
This is with blender 2.49 using the primary GTX480 connected to the monitor.

http://www.refractivesoftware.com/terre ... opengl.avi (42MB)

The footage is real-time filmed.
These are large AVI files straight off the digital camera, can someone who knows about these things upload them to youtube or vimeo and post links here ? (i've never used those things and don't have a clue how to start nor a login on them)

We've also made some more optimizations and also optimizations for fermi cards, so the GTX480 is a real nice card for octane.
Even with one of these you'll have a pretty similar experience.
I would highly recommend professional users of octane render to get 2 GTX480 cards, especially if you want to do interactive demos of your models/architecture for customers.

Thanks,
Radiance

Wow, really impressive video's Radiance! Awesome, thanks a lot! The directlighting vids are particularly great. And OpenGL rendering is indeed slower than raytracing, must be a first
I can't hardly imagine what Octane will run like on GPUs from 2011, you might want to make a virtual reality engine by then :D

Héhé, Thank fo these videos.
Any new benchmark on the current multigpu build?
BTW: your videos are far too heavy for that size (640x480), I notice 15Mbits. 4Mbits should be far enought.
