CAR WAS ...

Hi,

This is the first project I made using the new and very promising version of Octane fully integrated into Blender.

I recently discovered on the net some very impressive images about the decline of Detroit, very sad but very strong and inspiring. I was really fascinated by some shot series probably well known by some of you, with wonderful buildings witness of a very thriving period.

Those images inspired me for a new project where once again the texturing would be one of the biggest deals considering the CUDA limitation of 64 RGB textures and 32 BW textures. I used several reference photos to set up the scene.

Firstly I rendered the image in color and finally decided to go for a high desaturated version with some residual color spots to get something stronger.

I used two GTX580 for the rendering in 3840x2200, the final image is downsized in 1920x1100.
As often I made one shot with sun light and another one with HDR lighting and mixed them.
Rendering time for the sun shot was about 20 min with the pathtrace mode about 40 min for the HDR one.

Edit:As the image is quite dark and pessimistic I added a child to introduce some hope, but it doesn't match with the compo so I removed it.

Looks like a great image. I especially like the black-and-white feel of it.

I do have some constructive criticism though:

1. I'm not sure I like the head-on composition. It does have a certain amount of power to the image, but at the same time, it gives the image an artificial feel to it.

2. The girl with the balloon is also square to the building and the camera, and the skirt looks quite stiff, giving her a mannequin-like look.

3. The splashes of color here and there are very effective.

4. I really like the old junker in front.

I really like the image overall. Great work!

Air con? on the roof looks too new.
Arm holding the balloon is unnaturally high IMO.
Not sure the corrected perspective is appropriate. If you keep it it might be better to leave out the girl
The viewer can engage with the building/scene in itself or with the girl but not both square on like this I think.
Everything else is excellent as usual. ;)

Thanks for your constructive comments and crits,

Indeed I think the child doesn't match with the compo, I'll introduce it with another view angle as other images will follow.

Pixelrush:Dirt on airco was in my todo list but forgot it, should be ok now ;)

Well if it's for your exclusive and personal usage, I've no problem with that ;)

Merci Thierry, d'autres images de cette scène devraient suivre, je vais aussi essayer de poster une version couleur. A+
