OctaneRender for Poser - Initial Overview

Our collaborative integrated plugins projects is about to reach a breakthrough with the up
and coming OctaneRender for Poser integrated plugin.

With this plugin users can have the OctaneRender engine tightly integrated into Smith Micro
Software's Poser 3d modelling and animation software for a fast workflow and rendering
pipeline suitable for interactive editing and fast final animation rendering output using
Poser's environment for scene setup, fine-tuning and animating all parameters for
three-dimensional human figures and lights - everything from inside Poser.

This new plugin product will be the third of a new series of fully integrated plugin solutions,
embedding the OctaneRender™ GPU-based rendering engine directly into major 3d modelling
applications.

Here are the FAQs regarding compatibility, licensing, and features. Like the other integrated
plugin editions, the Poser Plugin will require a valid license key and also an authenticated
version of OctaneRender Standalone Edition present in the same machine.

Features:

- fov, camera pos, camera direction and up direction are set by Poser
- transfers entire scene (scene elements) to octane and then editing octane nodes through octane render setup
- tree structure / hierarchy editor allows users to access and edit all the different visible and non-visible components of the scene
- OctaneRender viewport to view rendered image in real-time:
PoserScreenSnap.jpg

- Will support both 32bit and x64 Windows systems

The launch date is yet to be determined.

Below is a video showing a working prototype of the Poser plugin:

Very much looking forward to any/all news and developments of what would (or, IMO, could) be a game-changing tool.

Long-time user of Poser (currently Pro 2012), and somewhat recent convert to OctaneRender (just over a year, now).
Without trying to step on toes of dancers across the room, will simply say that while the Firefly render engine has improved a great deal, and while the material nodes within Poser Pro have been expanded to include the use of SSS, the time involved in getting to a (biased) final product remains painfully lengthy - to put it mildly - even at this late stage of that software's time-line.
OpenCL has provided for an "alternative" for the reduction of wait-times (often via another popular rendering tool), and continues to create a promising outlook. But far more interested have many of us had in the full utilization of Nvidia products within the Poser pipeline ...and in a more direct way, harnessing the full power of CUDA. (So much so that we've grasped at numerous ways to import, export, contort and distort original works from Poser or DAZ Studio into something Octane could work with. Frequently, at the loss of many painstakingly detailed material nodes.)

Enter the OctaneRender Integrated Plugin for Poser.

Nice.

Speed should soon, now, follow; joined by focused stability ...and an as-of-yet unseen ability to translate Poser materials accurately to Octane?

So, yes, my only additional comment/concern would be this:
Recommend to pay special attention to the reasons many Poser users continue to put up with the frustrations:
SSS and an esoteric understanding of the Poser Materials Room.
...as mentioned above, these features do actually work - and well for those who've devoted themselves to the learning curve. OctaneRender Development would, thus, do well to be sure that the translation from SSS nodes (stripped of AO nodes) and material nodes to Octane materials is a smooth one wherever possible.
Understandably, Poser nodes can be somewhat... proprietary. As such, I, myself, wouldn't mind waiting a little longer for this plugin to cook enough to include a robust and seamless materials translation engine.

Additionally, any ability to somehow integrate one or more of Poser's saved camera views into the Octane viewport would be lovely, too. (Rather than fumbling to simulate saved views.) Something like this would, of course, be secondary to the material linking.
But, then, I'm confident things like this must surely be part of the R&D process.
Edit: Nevermind - Already part of the beta, it seems, with "- fov, camera pos, camera direction and up direction [all] set by Poser". Sweet.

That said, Cheers to this promising pathway!

P.S.: Apparently one must be "authorized" to view the OP's above-linked post for the Community-interaction/progress for the plugin?

Thank you for your thoughts.

Speed should soon, now, follow; joined by focused stability ...and an as-of-yet unseen ability to translate Poser materials accurately to Octane?

IMO, after untold hours working with Poser, and many many hours with Octane, a texturemap in an Octane glossy node will render more realistically than a 100 node material setup with AO, SSS, alt spec, etc etc in Poser. So trying to convert complex node setups from Poser is counterproductive to what the plugin is trying to achieve. Instead, the material basics are translated, and then you can apply templates (material macros) to the translated materials, and I think this workflow is very effective.

In practice, users are not going to spend hours tweaking the Poser materials and then render in Octane. Once they have this plugin, they will not be using Firefly. Users will load all the figures/props into the scene, get things right using the OpenGL view, and then load the scene into the Octane plugin to set materials and render. With this workflow, I don't see a need for a complex material conversion engine - the plugin simply needs to get the material basics into the Octane plugin and the users modifies the materials in there.

do well to be sure that the translation from SSS nodes (stripped of AO nodes) and material nodes to Octane materials is a smooth one wherever possible.

A skin material from Poser translates to a glossy node in Octane, with defaults which (IMO) give a fantastic rendered result in Octane (and better than the best skin shader in Poser - again, IMO). If you want SSS too, rightclick the material tab and load your favorite SSS skin preset, and it applies that material macro to the material, with the option to preserve or replace the tetxuremaps.

So in summary, the ideology behind the plugin is that the material conversion is basic, but once in the Octane plugin, there are lots of macro type options to quickly get to the result you are looking for. For example, you can cut and paste material, remove all bumpmaps from all or a subset of materials, save and material collections (preserving or replacing maps), etc.

Hope that helps.
