C4D PR14 Crashing R23 on M1 Max

Hey all,

I am having an immensely frustrating afternoon here. I am slated t start working on a pretty large project which will lean heavily upon Octane / C4D. I have just purchased my subscription, downloaded the most recent stable versions of the standalone and plugin (PR14), but C4D simply crashes when opening now... yay.

Here are the steps I have taken:

- Copied the C4D_OctaneX_Studio_PR14 folder to the User -> Library -> Preferences -> MAXON -> Maxon Cinema 4D R23_2FE1299C -> plugins folder
- Removed unrelated .xlib files, leaving only
- c4doctane-R23.xlib
- lib octane.dylib
- octane.dat
- res (folder)
- Switched C4D R23 to open with Rosetta (why is this still a thing so far into the existence of this platform?)
- Clicked through and 'allowed' all the gatekeeper prompts in System Preferences -> Security

Of note, I was getting the customary 'cannot be opened because... unidentified developer' message for the .xlib, BUT the message I got on the .dylib file was different in that the dialogue states that it needs to be updated. My first launch worked without the dylib being loaded, but after clicking the 'open anyway' in system prefs, and relaunching I now get the crash dialogue from Cinema seconds into the launch sequence - pretty much the instant the splash screen comes up.

So, I obviously have some broader questions concerning when we might see a native Apple Silicon build, and searching the forums with M1 or M1 Mac won't cull results as the words are 'too common', but at a more urgent level, I need to suss out why I am unable to use the software at all.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

Alright, after some more digging, I found that I needed to install the plugin in the Applications -> Maxon Cinema4D R23 -> plugins folder rather than the one I placed it in yesterday. It would be helpful - in the absence of a an installer - to include a readme with instructions. I had to search and found a video which gave me the wrong advice leading me to install incorrectly.

So, the good news is, Cinema launches successfully without crashing. The bad news is, the live viewer will not render... anything. So there's that.

Cheers
- Willie

Hi,
please note that PR14 has some issues with M1:

    - Volumes/vdbs are not working in plugin, only Standalone.
    - AI Denoiser and Upscaling are not working
    - C4D Shaders are not supported, and you need to go to c4doctane Settings/C4D Shaders, and disable both OSL and Auto Backing options.
    - cannot work with other native plugins like X-Particles or RedSHift

So you should need to have two versions of C4D installed, one for native plugins like RedShift, and another one in Rosetta mode for c4doctaneX and any other plugin not in native mode for M1 chip.

ciao,
Beppe

Okay, after a little more research, I discovered that the plugin required to be installed in a different location from where I had yesterday—namely, the Applications -> Maxon Cinema4D R23 -> plugins folder. In the lack of an installer, it would be beneficial to add a readme with instructions. I had to look for a video, and when I did, it offered me bad advise that caused me to install things wronglyoctordle

In essence, this means that M1 support is available for those who require Cinema 4D to run in Rosetta for the Substance pipeline, but S26 cannot.

Hi,
this is an outdated discussion.

We have published from some time OctaneX 2022.1_test native for M1/M2 only, for both macOS 12 Monterey and 13 Ventura, and in pair with Windows CUDA version.
Now we are at the third Release Candidate version, next one will be the stable version.
c4doctane 2022.1-RC3:

Have a look at the following tutorial on how to install it:

Happy Mac GPU rendering!
