How to change material of cloned object with effector?

TLDW:

I'm animating a factory line of donuts. The donuts are cloned and are setup on a path (spline effector) and the offset is animated so the move on this path. As the donuts go down the line they will pass through an oven. I want to setup an effector that changes the material as it passes through. I'd like to make this as seemless as possible so I can show the donut getting "cooked" and later on I want to show them getting Icing put on as well. I've done research and a lot of the videos/post don't have the cloner objects moving or animating. Instead they have the falloff animated as it passes over the objects. In the video above I show how I thought I would accomplish it with the Shader effector but it didn't work.

Any help or info is appreciated! Thank you!

Hi,
the video seems not available on vimeo, anyway, what about animating the amount of a Mix or Bland material with a linear gradient in Planar projection?
