Combining my TitanX Maxwell with newer Pascals ?

Hi,

I am using Octane for Cinema4D now, with a TitanX Maxwell.
I am thinking on adding another card to my system, to have even lower render times.

I have 2 questions, related to the use of more than one Nvidia Card with Octane.

I would like to know, If :

A) can I "mix" my TitanX Maxwell , with a newer TitanX Pascal, on my system ?
Will that combination work well and double the speed ?

Or will the generational differences from the two cards affect the performance in a negative way ?

I would like to know if maybe using just another TitanX Maxwell, instead of a Pascal,
could be better , faster and smoother for Octanes calculations, etc.

B) Also, about the amount of memory on the cards, just to confirm: as far as I remember reading somewhere,
the card with the smaller amount of memory in you system, (used by Octane),
will determine the maximum available memory of the GPUs available to render a scene. Right ?

In other words, if I want to keep my available GPU memory at 12Gb, I should not buy/add
another card with 8 Gb, because that will limit the available memory to render scenes on 8Gb, right ?

Should I add another with 12 GB to maintain the memory available of the GPUs, on 12 Gb ? Is this right ?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi,

Yes, you can mix the Maxwell and Pascal cards. OctaneRender 3 supports Pascal cards, 2 does not.

Yes, the lesser vram card determines the maximum to use for all cards.
If you need 12 gb vram the most of the times you better buy another 12 gb card.
But if you need 8 gb the most of the time and 12 gb just seldom, then you could add 8gb if that saves you a lot of money or gives you more speed. Or for other reasons you kight have... then if you need to render a scene bigger then 8gb you can disable the 8 gb card(s) and use the 12 gb cards only to render that scene.

Cheers,

Thanks a lot for your answer!

While I would "spect" that it be possible ro mix maxwells and pascals,
It's really good news to have a confirmation of that ( for me at least : )

I think there are some 1080s with 11 Gb out now ?

Thanks for all your info and advices :)
