Animating things in a stereo pan on GearVR - sky for instanc

We are having a degree of success with rendered stereo cubes on a GearVR. These are mainly architectural scenes. What I'd like to do is have an animated sky slowly move as the viewer is looking around. Nothing too dramatic - we wouldn't want dynamic lighting etc - just quite subtle.

Is it possible to do this kind of thing, and if so, where would I find the necessary code tutorials for doing so?

We can easily render out a matte to isolate just the background (sky) areas. Can we somehow place an animated sky render 'behind' the render?
