Multi GPU getting HOT

Hey everyone,

this is not directly related to Octane but kind of is:
I recently got a new build which I commissioned as a GPU work horse: Ryzen 5 5950X + 2x Gigabyte Gaming OC 3080

It's expectably blazing fast but gets also VERY hot when rendering. Both GPUs sit around 80 - 85°C under pressure (even with open casing) which I assume can not be too healthy in the long run. In some forums undervolting was suggested which I tried but that gave me render console errors within Octane.

Questions: Is this a usual temperature range? Does anyone have any experiences with a build like this? What could be my options to get temperatures into a normal range?

If the cards are not blower style then yes I would say 85C is normal for a full scale all out render session. Opening case could help but one card is still dumping hot air down into the other. Case air flow set up becomes very important in these situations.

Not sure why Octane is giving you problems under-volting. Have you tried other means of limiting the cards through MSI After Burner or EVGA Precision X?

One of my computer’s has 3 cards. A water cooled 1080ti, a hybrid 1080ti and a fan cooled 1070ti (not a blower). The 1070ti usually reaches around 80 to 85c at max render. The water cooled cards hover between 43-55c. They did run cooler before I put in that 1070ti (but I also need to clean out and do maintenance on the water cooling system).

Bottom line: 85c Is within normal operating temperature for GPU’s running full throttle. To what extent prolonged exposure to those temps impact the life of the cards I don’t know. About that I would be interested in learning what others have to say.

I would use MSI Afterburner to set your cards "power limit" to 80% instead of undervolting.

The cards will benchmark about 2% slower, but should be much cooler/quieter. If they were already getting too hot and throttling, your renders may even end up being faster.
