View OCIO in IPR 2020.2

Is there any documentation regarding how to connect the new OCIO nodes in 2020.2 in order to view the IPR through the the ACEScg colorspace? Or are there any users out there that have managed to decipher this process?

Thanks, Travis

---- EDIT ----

Ok, I believe I've figured this out, enough at least to get a 1:1 ACES representation in the IPR. Here's what I did in case anyone else is trying to figure this out. I implemented this via Houdini, but I'm sure it's the same in other DCCs and or Standalone.

In the Octant Render Target I connected the OCIO View node to the Camera Imager, I also connected the OCIO Look node, but this didn't seem to make any difference. I'm assuming this is a means of saving different look options, but I haven't been able to figure this one out as of yet.. so basically just hook up the OCIO View node (its default settings are ACES/sRGB.

Then in the Octane ROP under the Output tab, set the Intermediate Octane color space drop down to ACES2065_1, the Color space drop down to OCIO and the Ocio color space role drop down to ACES-ACES2065-1.

In this example, the IPR window is on the left and Affinity Photo is on the right showing the ACES exr file.. a perfect match!

Hi Travis,

thanks for taking the time to look into this.

I'm getting an error: " *** OCTANE API MSG: device 0: Failed to build OCIO LUT: No intermediate OCIO color space selected "
I I turn of tonemapping in the OCTANE Options, the error disappears, but the render doesn't start ( ipr black screen, freeze on "preprocessing scene")

OKay, tried it in a scene I built from scratch and it works. Thanks Travis, I don't think I ever would have found this without your mini tutorial :)

EDIT: So in the IPR it works, but when I save to disk, it doesn't apply the same color settings. Right click on the ipr, save image, gives rainbowy colours. Render to disk from the ROP node seems to ignore all the settings.

Here's a test render using ACES/OCIO . I really like the treatment of highlights and overall realism of lighting. Very cool.
(I took a screenshot to get this render to disk btw :) )

EDIT: 2 More renders, wow, so much easier to get the lighting/realism right.

Thanks again Travis !

Hey WoutTgh,

Glad to see it's working for you.. happy to help.

Regarding not being able to save out the image, are you saving the file as an EXR? ACES won't apply to any file format that is natively sRGB, like png.

Also, if you don't have the Color Space setting in the ROP set to OCIO then you can't access the Ocio color space role dropdown and those both seem to be necessary for the IPR to pickup the OCIO view. You should be able to render out with these same settings as long as you're saving as EXR (I use 32bit, but 16 bit will work as well). If you don't have the Color Space option set to OCIO, then the IPR will give you the LUT error. You can change the Ocio color space role in the ROP and if you reload the IPR you will see the resulting change..

What image editing app do you use to finish your stills?

Hey Travis,

okay, that's too bad, it would be very nice to be able to export the current IPR render, as it is displayed, as png, or exr, or whatever..

The renders I posted above weren't post processed in any image editing app, I just printscreened/screenshotted them :)

I'm trying to get things to work in After Effects at the moment using an 32bit . exr file rendered to disk through the OCtane ROP.

Thanks for your help !

What settings to do you have for your .exr file in the image editor ?

Ok, I got it working in After Effects; this video was super helpful : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QO6t2iR1JI

In the video he adds two adjustments layer, one from Aces2065 to ACEScg, and one from ACEScg to sRGB, that works, but you can just add one, and set it to display like in the screenshot below:

Here's a screenshots if you don't like video tutorials ( like me :) )

HOUDINI_OCTANE_AFTER_EFFECTS_ACES.jpg

As you can see the colors match between the IPR and the Viewer in After Effects. The banding on the left image is because of the 50% zoom setting in AFX Viewer.

and here's the link to the After Effects Plugin : http://fnordware.blogspot.com/2012/05/o ... fects.html

I also found that if you wanna export from the IPR, by right clicking export, exr ( NOT TONEMAPPED ! ), then you can import that render in After Effects and all you have to change is the input space in the OpenColorIO effect, set it to, utility - Linear.

Hey Wout,

I’m using Affinity Photo for stills (it has OCIO functionality built in and is easier to use for EXR images than PS) and Davinci Resolve for animations. I don’t use AE, but there are plenty of good tutorials on using it with ACES and I believe OCIO functionality is built in at this point. Many people seem to be using this workflow for still images as well. Of course you can always take a screen shot, but then you don’t get all the extra color info that ACES / EXR provides for editing.

Looks like I missed your post above regarding AE. Happy to see you got it working :)
