Octane for unreal engine 4

I'm about to learn unreal engine 4 and I've heard a development for octane to unreal?

I just have a quick question, I'm a bit confused as to what the work flow is from octane to unreal?

Isn't unreal engine its own render engine? or does the octane render replace the unreal engine? If so what are the benefits? or I'm better of using the unreal engine itself?

Any response would be appreciated. Thanks

Pretty sure Octane is used to compute the shadows, which Unreal uses Lightmass for by default (it's slow as heck)
