Great moster machine, congrats on getting one :).

As for the temperatures maybe those numbers are in F and no C ? In usa they don't use Celsious (˘C) AFAIK.

Those numbers are in fact measured in Celsius. The liquid maintains a temp of 62c in a warm room.

The only thing I don't like about this is the fans... wtf is up with those vortex fins (guards I guess)? They totally look like they are reducing airflow... slap some Noctuas or Be Quiets (with their open design) on those rads and maybe you could shave a chunk of degrees... Right guys?

62° seems rather warm for water. Could mean trouble for pumps down the road... er, right guys?

No they are in Celsius - I've got D5 latelly from XSPC & was surprised too (never knew that before)..so it worth to keep an eye on temps - now I understand why guys make checkpoints not only for CPU/GPU temps but olso water =)

Well then if is Celsious i'd agree that's a bit too hot for water cooling. My friend uses 3*780Ti with water cooling (also EKWB) and rendering temperatures are well below 50C and idle is under 30 C. So 63-77C is pretty hot for WC system considering my Air cooled and heavily overclocked Asus STRIX are going into 68-79 Celsious range (depending on position of card being that top one is hottest and bottom one is coldest).

BUT if the guys who built machine give you 3 years warranty for parts and labor then I'd says "who cares". In 3 years it's going to pay itself dozen of times anyway :D.

You can reduce temps significantly - the #1 solution would cost you about 200$

The #2 is another story.

1. Get 3x3 external radiator and simply plug it with Koolance quick disconnects to the loop. Water temp above 60C is a killer for pumps. I read here https://s3.amazonaws.com/pumpproducts/p ... ochure.pdf
that only with brass housing D5 can handle 95C limit, with plastic 60C.

2. This confirms my earlier worries that for such amount of gpus 900D is too small. STH10 is a perfect solution - 2x 480 rad on top (with 2x PSUs this would be 2x 360), 2x 560 in a bottom chamber, 1x 480 in front (or even another 2x 560 in the pedestal). Then you'd get temps around 40C (water around 35C) under full load.

PS. Agreed with frank - the plastic fan covers are redundant - take them off. You have a dust filter stock built in.

agree with Smicha here, If I would have such system, I would definitely get extra external RAD while working in studio - way lower temp, longer life for parts & probably way more OC from Your system - could probably get extra Titan or two in terms of performance out of Your system easily (that's 1-2k$), but in comparison the investment is negligible - rad itself is probably 200-300$ pluss some fans (9x20-30$) & pair of quick disconnects..

I can see why You want for this route & choose this case (considering You wan't to transport this rig) but moving water-cooled beast isn't the best idea too, unless You have like custom Peli Case & do that very gently..

So in some aspects there's still a room for improvement here, that You could make even on Your own =)

Hey guys I have been communicating with Maingear about some of the concerns you all have and they sent me this message. Gotta say that their customer service has been outstanding!


"Sean here from MAINGEAR Computers. I see there has been a few questions regarding the temperature threshold of the D5 Laing pumps we are using for Light-Borne's system and would like to clarify them.

D5 Laing pump are capable of running with no problems up to 95 Degree Celsius, which it will then safely shuts itself down to prevent damage to the pump. Based on provided documents, the 60 Degree Celsius limit is essentially for the default plastic pump top (housing) and not the pump itself. Our systems do not use the default pump top but instead, we use an Acetal plastic based pump top that has higher maximum temperature limit of 80 Degree Celsius. This allows our pumps (we have two D5 pumps for redundancy purposes in all our Force systems) to run at higher temperatures without running the risk of damaged housing or leaking parts. We also build our system with integrated controlled fans that controls all fans to the temperature of the system itself instead of them running individually. This is to prevent excessive fan noise coming from the system when a certain component runs hotter than the others. Our customers have the option to bypass this option and go with having the fans on full throttle to cool the radiators even faster, bringing down the temperature of the liquid even more.

And coming to the fan choice, we went with the Silverstone Air penetrator 140mm fans. The grills at the back of the fans provide air channeling feature that allows air to travel in a straight directed path instead of the usual dispersed flow. This concentrates the airflow directly over the radiator fins and out of the radiator so heat is removed immediately.

Thanks for the update Bulwerk. My theory about your somewhat higher temps on the Z's is because of the additional RAM. Very few people have used Titan Z's on these forums yet, let alone 4 of them in one machine - that's 48GB of video RAM. There is no way to get those temps down unless you change some hardware. But 60 degrees C is not too hot for a system. I would personally feel comfortable with up to 75 degrees with Titan Z's - even on water. They can handle much higher temps and it sounds like your WC system can too. There are other things you can do, as has been suggested by others as well, including a better/bigger rad system but I would not worry about it.

The only thing I think that is important in your case is to try and ensure that your box is always in a well ventilated area. I guess it's not something you can always guarantee when moving around to various sets, but I would invest in a good, strong external fan to lug around with the machine.

PS: Smicha is correct with regard to longevity of the system if it's kept cooler of course... but I don't think your temps are over the critical mass point.
