Rebuild bty with all light passes

Hi
I can't see an answer to this on the forums. I see 2 or 3 posts linking back to some passes rebuild page in the docs, but the links are broken now as they're from a few years back.

How do I rebuild a BTY using individual light passes?
Diffuse + Reflection + Refraction + Emitters (as the other post say) + light passes isn't it.

The result looks hotter in the lights and darker in the shadows, than the single bty pass.

Also, how do I get light passes out? You need to up the samples to 4-5x what the bty needs to get each light pass clean. Redshift, light passes are usually almost always clean. Why is it so hard with Octane?

I need to rebuild several shots using individual lights for animation purposes, starting from a base of matching the bty but having control over mixing of all light passes.

Thanks
AN

Hi AN,
beauty passes are incompatible with light passes, so you should need to render each individual light ID with beauty passes, then compose them back together in post.
On the other side, Light passes can be split in Direct Light and Indirect light passes, per Light ID.
Have you tried the new Light Mixer AOV output node?

I'm using 2020.2.5 for reasons, so no I have not tried the new mixer node thing.

What do you mean render each light ID with beauty passes? Render the shot 6-8 times, each time with a different light?
What is the point of the light passes if you can't tweak them in post and achieve the same result as the beauty?
I am pretty sure if you render light passes from Redshift including remainder you get back to the beauty.

If you enable all the Light AOVs/passe, without tweaking them, you obtain the exact same render as the Main Beauty pass
What I mean is that you cannot split each Light pass in Diffuse, Reflection, Refraction, ecc., but you can split each Light ID in direct or indirect lighting.

Right so I need to render 3x the number of passes? Hmm that's a bit of a problem.
I'll have 24 passes just for lights, to be able to control in post? Seems like a missing feature?

Agree with not wanting to split each light into diff, refr, relf, etc. Just each light's "bty" is what I am after but the light ID is not the full light "bty" it seems, that's only obtained from the ID + direct + indirect.

Would you guys consider adding a "light bty" in future, so that we could export 1 pass that is the combination of ID+direct+indirect? As currently 3x passes for each, is a but much to deal with.

Thanks for clarifying.

I think there may be some miscommunication here. If I'm understanding your question, then you can simply add all your light passes to generate the beauty.

The formula is: Ambient Light + Sunlight + Light Pass 1 + Light Pass 2 + Light Pass 3 + Light Pass 4 + Light Pass 5 + Light Pass 6 + Light Pass 7 + Light Pass 8 = Beauty

Here is a sample file created in 2020.2.5. It includes 8 lights along with the sun and ambient. It uses a composite AOV output with 10 layers, each set to ADD blend mode.

If you click the "Main" and "Out1" buttons under the viewport, you'll see they match.

You can control the mix of each light by selecting the corresponding "Composite AOV output layer" and adjusting it's scale

Hi John,

That's not working for me though. All light passes account for all lights in the scene. In my case, not even 8 - I only have 6, no sun and no ambient. Light passes 1-6 all added together are different to the beauty. I can't show an example here as I'm under NDA.

I have PMed you. If you can delete most of the geometry and replace it with a couple of cubes, you should still be able to reproduce the problem so we can look into it.

I assume the previous test scene I attached works for you though?
