A. MacOSX Big Sur 11.3
B. Radeon Pro 560X 4 GB and EGPU in Sonnet 650 external case AMD Radeon Pro WX 9100 16GB Workstation Graphics Card
C. 32 GB 2400 MHz DDR4
D. Nvidia driver version (not applicable)
E. OctaneRender Standalone version Octane X latest version
F. OctaneRender plugin version. C4D-OctaneX-Studio-PR11
G. Host application version, C4D R24.037 (Build 24_0.CL344484.14251)
H.The problem in C4D interaction with Octane is it is sluggish often beach balls and is practically unusable in comparison to Redshift running in the same program. Rewatching the video it appears that the generating material previews is the problem and this can easily be seen in the lower tab.

Please see attached link to video capture that describes the issue:
https://youtu.be/lzoP71RvbKE

I. I got this log as I was trying to turn Material Preview on and off as I saw this was an option. It was already turned off by default, however the materials were updating even with this not checked.

Hi,
thanks for sharing the video.

Things to consider:

  • Standalone does not have a viewport, so it does not have to deal with OpenGL/Metal while rendering.
  • c4doctane Live View has to deal with both GPU rendering and OpenGL/Metal interface in real time.
  • I suppose you have a MacBook Pro, so the Intel+AMD 560 GPUs are also used to manage interface/system/monitor.
  • In c4doctane Settings/Devices panel, you can enable the Priority option for the GPUs connected to monitor, and the Priority popup must be set to LOW, since HIGH means no priority.
  • If a GPU connected to monitor is deactivated, the Priority is not necessary, since the GPU that handles the interface, is not also used for rendering.
  • If you keep both AMD 560 and WX9100 active at the same time, you are losing 12GB of VRAM, since the GPU with less VRAM defines the limit of the system.
  • If you run the following test you can have a rough idea of the performance of both GPUs: viewtopic.php?f=30&t=75411&start=700#p399724

Here is how it works on my Mac Mini 2018 with Intel GPU only for system/monitor, and an eGPU AMD 6900:

Forgot to say that, you can go to /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor, run it, then go to menu Window/GPU History, to see the activity of th GPUs while working in Live View:

Many many thanks. Totally solved. I had no idea what these settings were and since Redshift seemed to work well out of the box I assumed there was a problem. Very well explained and the Activity monitor tip is really useful. Again Beppe many thanks
