OctaneRender® for 3ds max® v2018.1-RC3 - 7.02 [OBSOLETE]

Plugin's version string consists of two parts - version of Octane core integrated into this version of plugin, and the version of the plugin itself.
Format: v<Octane engine version> - <plugin version>

3ds Max version supported: 2013 to 2019

This is a TEST release with new features implemented, so some issues are expected. Please report the bugs in the "Bug reports" section.

Please note that this release is based on Octane 2018 XB2, and is not recommended for production work :
As with all experimental and test releases, please do not use this build for production work, and please note that we still classify this as an experimental release. We cannot guarantee that scenes saved with this version would be compatible with future releases.

Changes of the 7.02 version, from 7.01

  • Updated to Octane render 2018 RC3
  • Fixed orthographic camera aperture
  • Updated vertex attributes to use the new vertex index per attribute. This fixes issues with some types of meshes.
  • Added Cryptomatte passes : CryptoMaterialNode and CryptoObjectNode
  • Added Cryptomatte settings in Render settings / Kernel tab.

Notes about the Channel settings of the Octane Geometry Properties modifier:
- Without modifier, and as in previous versions, the 3 octane UV channels are set automatically to channel 1,2,3, when those exist.
- Without modifier, the new octane attributes (2 vertex colors and 4 vertex floats) are set automatically to channel 0 (vc0) and 4 to 8, when those exist.
- With the modifier, you can choose any channel (and component for the float channels, eg 0,1,2 : r,g, or b).
- A modifier could be common to several objects, but if those objects don't have the same channel settings, you should choose 'Make Unique' in the modifier stack options.
- A matching texture, using those attributes, need to be used in the object's material : '' or 'Greyscale vertex attribute'
and the Name must be 'MapChannel:x' , where x is the 3dsmax channel index (from -2 to 99)
- To choose the octane UV set of a texture (uvs 1 to 3), add a 'Mesh UV projection' texture to the 'Projection' map.

Notes about the Mesh subdivision settings of the Octane Geometry Properties modifier:
- The subdivision settings have been moved from the Octane Object Properties to the Octane Geometry Properties modifier
- Using both Mesh subdivision and vertex color / float is currently not supported.

Sample scenes will be posted soon.

Known issues:
-Using vertex color and displacement map on the same object may cause cuda failure.

Note on new features from 4.24:
-The newly supported textures works same as in standalone : add at least a UV scaling map to adjust the effect.
 Note that the render in max viewport do not match those settings yet..
 The option in the Tools tab "Enable 3dsMax Viewport UV Correction" might help.
-The newly supported W control for Hair also works same as in standalone, eg: adding a 'W Coordinates' texture as input to a 'Gradient Texture' used for hair material will let you control the variation along the length of hairs.
 This 'W Coordinates' has no parameters. You can use the option 'Use custom W for Hair' in Tools tab to use Ws generated by the hair plugin.

Changes of the 4.1 version
- Implemented the PhoenixFD simulator support. You need to apply the new "OctaneVolume" modifier on top of simulator object to have access to additional Octane-specific settings. Mapping of PhoenixFD channels to Octane: temperature -> emission, smoke -> apsorption -> scatter, and velocity -> velocity.
- Implemented a feeding of Octane image textures by non-Octane textures input. Now not only BitmapTex can be connected to "bitmap" attribute of Octane image textures. In this case the new "Bake input scale" and "Bake input resolution" attributes of Octane image texture must be tuned accordingly. But I still advise you to not abuse this approach too much, and still use the old efficient way: manually baking the texture to the file and use this file in created Octane image node. Because in the latter case you will do this manual baking only once - when you are creating the texture. But when you use this "on the fly" texture baking approach - the plugin will render (using standard 3ds Max CPU-calculated nodes) and bake every such texture every time during scene translation. So, if you have quite a few of such textures with high baking-resolution set - it will significantly increase the scene translation time. My measures for just one 3ds Max "Marble texture" show about 67ms rendering and baking it into 512x512 image buffer, and about 1500ms to do the same into 4092x4092 image buffer. Multiply this by amount of your non-Octane textures in the Octane scene - and you will get the overall slowdown time of every translation stage (the CPU-stage before Octane even starts to render on GPU).

- Implemented the support of "Time" settings of standard BitmapTex when it is connected to any of Octane image textures. "Sync Frames to Particle Age" currently is not supported - this needs the support on Octane rendering core level.
- Implemented advanced file sequence settings for Octane image textures and volume object. The "digits number" setting only makes sense when direct file sequence is used (not an IFL file). The "end condition" makes sense only when IFL file is used. The "start frame" and "playback rate" are used in both modes.
- Textures preview now respects the timeline position when generated.
- Implemented the distribution visualisation for Octane IES lights having target. See the new "IES distribution visualisation" section in Octane settings.

Here are some basic samples of usage of vertex colors and vertex float attributes, with and without the Octane Geometry Properties modifier:

By default, a mesh will have the map channels set to be used with Octane attributes as follow:

Default channel settings:
3dsMax channel / Octane attribute
0 : vertex color 0
1 : UVW map 0
2 : UVW map 1
3 : UVW map 2
4 : vertex color 1
5,6,7,8 : float attribute 0,1,2,3

To set the channel usage differently, you need to add an Octane Geometry Properties modifier.

--- sample 1 - VertexColorOnImage.max
-Using default channel setting :
- channel 1 for UV map of the image
- channel 0 for vertex color (vertex paint modifier)

--- sample 2 - VertexColors_doubleChannels_default.max -
-Using Default channel settings
-One single mesh with 2 Vertex Paint modifiers, set to channel 0 and 4 respectively
-3 instances of this , with 3 materials:

- material 4 is a mix of material 1 and 2, and so is using both vertex color channels

To use different channel settings, an Octane Geometry Properties modifier has been added:
-On the top of the 2 vertex pain modifier, an Octane Geometry Properties modifier is used to assign:
- Octane Color 1 to 'channel 0' (vertex color)
- Octane Color 2 to 'channel 1'
The second 'Color vertex attribute' texture has the name set as 'MapChannel:1'

--- sample 4 - VertexAlphaOnImage.max ---
-Vertex paint set to channel -2 (Vertex Alpha)
-Octane Geometry Properties modifier : 'Vertex float 1' set to channel 'Alpha (-2)'
-The plane material use an Opacity texture : Greyscale vertex attribute, with name set as 'MapChannel:-2'
-Changing the Component for this 'Vertex float 1' (0,1,2) will use the corresponding color (r,g,b) from the Vertex paint channel.

Note that objects MUST be set as movable proxy to use vertex color.

I get an instant crash to desktop without any notice if I try to open/merge/xref a certain plant model. Everything related with Octane kills 3dsmax without any further message. As soon as I merge the file in a new scene with set to Scanline Renderer it works.
When I then switch renderer to Octane and pick the material from the model all crashes without notice.

I tried back to Octane 4 and there it works fine. Doesn't work for 2018.1

Xref scene (not Xref object) workflow doesn't save RAM or VRAM, could reduce file size and helps to prepare a scene step by step or in workgroup.

Ok, what do we now with this error? Why can I import it with Octane 4 but not 2018? What could cause the error? Help appreciated! As you can see the material setup of the model is no magic.

For CPU render engines Xref technique helps you to save some RAM amount. Does Octane also saves some VRAM with using Xrefs? If not - what are the benefits of using Xrefs?

Just reduces .max file size. If you merge all objects the file will bloat and bloat. Other benefit for a xref-object are changes to the source model. It will get changed to all other scenes using this object as a xref file too.

I got it working somehow.
Imported the file I uploaded for you. It was still set to Standard render. So it imported fine.
I then changed to Octane Renderer. Saved and Exit.
Opened again, now it worked but model was black. Reassigned texture paths. Saved and closed again.
Opened another time and all was working with Assignate textures.

A "bit" of a hassle and another closed X-File case. ;)

Hi, is it me or V2018 works more smooth with max ? Max open fast , no slowdown in the UI ( vs V4 ) ?
