Hi coilbook,
border mode work fine; this option sets the behavior of the space around the image if the image does not cover the entire geometry. The default behavior is Wrap around, which means that the image is repeated in the areas outside of the images coverage. If set to white or black, the area outside the image will be white or black respectively.
You are usign a hdri file, they usually work wrapping the whole scene.

As I can see in your screenshot, you have only 3.4 GB VRAM avaible using SA, instead using 3dsMax 2.7 GB VRAM avaible, SA has not 3dsMax viewport.
your computer eats all the remaining VRAM.

Do you reckon this is to investigate? and actually I can't do a screenshot with the setting you suggested as no matter which cards I deactivate it just get stuck to Evaluating the scene...as soon as I re-activate a card it work again

Thanks Paride,
what about the other two bugs I reported with phoenix - very slow loading time with multiple grids and octane does not load sim if rendering starts with empty phoenix grid?

Thanks

I played around with the denoiser settings and it tunred off my computer like if I had a power blackout. :D Killswitch....

Had Octane Viewport open, while showing denoised beauty, changed samples and unchecked first the "denoise on finished" and then the actual denoiser setting aboove it. Click, computer off.
I have not time to investigate further at the moment. Running Win7 Pro with Nvidia 388.71 and 4x 1080ti - USed around 8GB/11GB while rendering. Was 3508x2480px rendering.
