Bug report.

If you apply a Shell modifier to an object. It's no more a smooth object. It's faced.
Please fix it Karba
Cheers

Just tested - smoothing works as expected. Please show your renders.

mykola1985 wrote:Karba, there is another bug with displacement I think....
the Octane viewport won't open anymore as soon as I apply a material with displacement map on multiple geometry instances. In error LOG i get the following message:

CUDA error 719 on device 0: An exception occurred on the device while executing a kernel. The context cannot be used anymore and must be destroyed. All existing device memory allocations from this context are invalid and must be reconstructed.
-> kernel execution failed (pick)
device 0: picking failed

i can send you the scene..

UPDATE: even if i reopen the scene, it still gives me the same error message and Octane viewport fails to open.

I have fixed several displacement bugs, wait for 2.11.

Thanks Karba sorry took your time.

But here I attached what I saw. But after seeing your post I reopened the scene and had a test render with shell on and off. The problem was there.
I tried averaging normals, removed smoothing, nothing. But If I re convert the object to editable poly.
It worked as it should..
Actually I bought this model. And it was in FBX file format. May be some smoothing or normals info was faulty with that.

But thanks anyway.

Karba, I just found out that this is a max specific problem..
I still believe this purely because of the fbx file I purchased.
Octane renders just fine.
It's odd but it renders badly same in Scanline. And smoothing gets corrected if object is copied. Funny isnt it :)
The object becomes triangular facet after applying the shell modifier.
If you still want the file anyway. it's attached.

You can see the final render of the car here
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=42950
You can also see the front window glass of the car has also the same facet problem due to shell modifier.

Thanks again,

Well, it is not smooth even in 3dsmax viewport.

Well, I guess I replaced max viewport with Octane viewport. :) :)
Somehow didn't bother to check glass object it's not clearly seen in viewport if its assigned a glass material.
So sorry about that really.
