ALT + LMB click not working for dragging node editor

Hi,
For a while now I've not been able to properly scroll the node editor. Normally I have to zoom in, select stuff then drag. The only thing that seems to sort of work is holding down middle mouse button over an area that has nodes in it and dragging left and it right. However I want to be able to easily scroll left/right/top/bottom -- I've read that ALT+LMB should accomplish this, but both left mouse button with our without alt just draw rectangular marquees.

Hi,
if you are in Standalone, have you tried to change the Wheel mode to Scroll in Preferences?

Solution:
I downloaded Neatmouse and set middle mouse button to be a letter on my keyboard.
